Unlikely fissures and uneasy resonances
Exploration of commonalities between parental claims for lesbian co-mothers and other contexts in which intention is a key aspect to family formation for (mostly) heterosexual families: in particular, surrogacy and pre-birth disputes over embryos. Through a series of case studies the paper uses the lens of empathy to argue for social or non-genetic modes of parenthood connecting lesbian mothers and other ‘reproductive outsiders’.- Creator

Baby steps
Book that discusses the issues and questions raised by lesbian alternative insemination. This form of family-making creates families with no legal or psychological father and challenges some of the basis assumptions about what it means to be a family. Drawing on legal findings and personal interviews, as well as medical and psychoanalytic research, sociologist Amy Agigian looks at the impact and potential of this form of reproduction.- Creator

Sexual minorities
Focus on the effects of outside influences on the homosexual psyche and programs and services to improve the quality of life. The authors describe how contemporary American society treats sexual minorities and how it affects their psychological and psychosocial health. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the GLBT population, including: the history of homophobia and intolerance toward homosexuals: a survey utilizing Erikson’s psychosocial model to determine the lifespan development of seven 'out' gay males who discuss their coming-out period, their roles in society, their legacies, and later-life issues: the lack of federal legislation protecting GLBT employees in the workplace and recommendations for creating a sense of security for these employees: the incidence rate of heterosexism amongst social workers and the repercussions this could have among homosexual clientele: the rate of abusive behavior in lesbian relationships: coming out, risk and protective factors: being homosexual in a rural environment as opposed to a city. This monograph has been co-published simultaneously as Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, volume 8, numbers 2/3, 2003.- Creator

The 'new' family?

Queering reproduction

Queering reproduction
Sociological analysis of lesbians' use of the medical fertility treatments. The author argues that reproduction has become a medicalized process for lesbians, who are transformed into fertility patients because of their sexual identities. She argues that this medicalization shapes queer subjectivities in both productive and troubling ways, destabilizing the assumed link between heterosexuality and parenthood while also reinforcing traditional ideals about motherhood and the imperative to reproduce. She explores questions about the legal rights of co-parents, concerns about the genetic risks of choosing an anonymous sperm donor, and the ways decisions to become parents affect sexual and political identities.- Creator

Invisible families
Drawing from interviews and surveys of one hundred black gay women in New York City the author describes the ways that race and class have influenced how these women understand their sexual orientation, find partners and form families. In particular, the study looks at the ways in which the past experiences of women who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s shape their thinking, and have structured their lives in communities that are not always accepting their openly gay status.- Creator

Social work with lesbian parent families
The traditional concept of family as being exclusively heterosexual has resulted in myth-generation about lesbian parents as well as fostering limitations in the programs and benefits that support more diverse nontraditional families. This book explores the variety of social systems with which lesbian parent families interact, with a focus on implications for improved, diversity-affirming service delivery and policy development. .The research goes beyond simple comparisons between lesbian and straight mothers. This text provides more complex research data, and aims to present the experiences of lesbian parent families in a holistic way. Developmental and life issues negotiated by lesbian parent families are discussed in detail using a strengths-based approach to intervention with individuals, families, small groups, communities, and larger systems. T .Topics discussed are: The impact of public policy on lesbian parents and their families : The experience of agency policy and practice in adoption : Employment benefits and the relationships between parenting and work decisions : Friendship networks and community support in the lesbian community : The impact of individual and institutional heterosexism in service delivery : and Diversity-affirming service delivery and policy .- Creator
