- Description
- This study explores the meaning of class to women's liberationists' identities and activism, both nationally and regionally, using a previously neglected feminist cluster in North East England as a case study. Stevenson demonstrates that British feminism was shaped fundamentally by its relationship to class politics. Feminists recognised how post-war changes in the economy and gender roles were reshaping class and the Women's Liberation Movement attempted to remake class politics in response. However, class differences between the women involved, linked to occupation, education and background, remained intractable obstacles causing tensions within groups, fragmentations into specific class-based groups and the ultimate failure of the movement to coalesce into a coherent coalition with labour politics, despite great levels of solidarity around particular struggles.

- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

Oakley, a prominent sociologist herself, mixes biography and autobiography, telling the story of her father's life in light of her own experience to set their family history in the larger context of social, economic, and political change in the twentieth century.

- Carlson compares the dynasty of the writers Wollstonecraft, Godwin and Shelley to a family. Their works and lives influence each other. The book includes chapters on the writers' efforts to rewrite the sentiments and literary conventions associated with family life, their sentiments and opinions on life and death, their embrace of fancy, the texts they wrote on and for children. The political theories and novels of Wollstonecraft and Godwin are considered to reform love to make it more conductive to the autonomy of women and men. With an epilogue 'On Percy's case'.

- Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1841-1929) was the first woman in Scotland to gain a university qualification. She devoted her life to the study of Shakespeare and to the promotion of women in public life. Though Charlotte is largely forgotten, her daughter Marie Carmichael Stopes (1880-1958) is well known as a passionate advocate of sex education and women’s rights. In this study Green asserts that Marie’s success can only be understood in relation to the achievements of her mother.

- Description
- It is paradoxical that instinct became a central term for late Victorian sexual sciences as they were elaborated in the medicalized spaces of confession and introspection, given that instinct had long been defined in its opposition to self-conscious thought. This book ties this paradox to instinct's deployment in conceptualizing governmentality. Instinct's domain, Frederickson argues, extended well beyond the women, workers, and 'savages' to whom it was so often ascribed. For elite European men, instinct became both an agent of 'progress' and a force that, in contrast to desire, offered a plenitude in answer to the alienation of self-consciousness.This shift in instinct's appeal to privileged European men modified the governmentality of empire, labor, and gender. The book traces these changes through parliamentary papers, pornographic fiction, accounts of Aboriginal Australians, suffragette memoirs, and scientific texts in evolutionary theory, sexology, and early psychoanalysis.

- Description
- Motherhood and citizenship are terms that are closely linked and have been redefined over the past century due to changes in women's status, feminist movements, and political developments. Mother-child relationships were greatly affected by political decisions during the early 1900s, and the maternal role has been transformed over the years. To understand the dilemmas faced by women concerning motherhood and work, for example, Allen argues that the problem must be examined in terms of its demographic and political development through history. Allen highlights the feminist movements in Western Europe--primarily Britain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands--and explores the implications of the maternal role for women's aspirations to the rights of citizenship. Among the topics Allen explores are the history of the maternal role, psychoanalysis and theories on the mother-child relationship, changes in family law from 1890-1914, the economic status of mothers, and reproductive responsibility.

- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- 'Feminism and Criminal Justice' is a study of the involvement of the women's movement in England and Wales with criminal justice policy in the period c. 1920-70. Challenging the assumption that feminist interest in criminal justice only began with the emergence of campaigns over rape and domestic violence and of feminist criminology in the 1970s, the book argues that criminal justice matters have been a long-term concern of the women's movement. Taking the topic from the 'suffragette' era to the early days of 'second wave' feminism, the book traces a network of individuals and organizations that took a special interest in this area of policy and examines their campaigns. A wide range of topics are covered including youth justice, the law on prostitution, the campaign for women jurors, the care of victims, women professionals and volunteers in the justice system and the movement for the abolition of the death penalty. - Barbara Wootton was one of the extraordinary public figures of the twentieth century. She was an outstanding social scientist, an architect of the welfare state, an iconoclast who challenged conventional wisdom and the first woman to sit as Speaker in the House of Lords in Parliament. This biography is an account of the making of British social policy at a critical period seen through the lens of the life and work of a pivotal figure. Oakley tells a story about the intersections of the public and the private and about the way her subject’s life unfolded within, was shaped by, and helped to shape a particular social and intellectual context.

- Description
- The author explores the sudden emergence and meaning of neoclassical women's dress in the 1790s, tracing its evolution from Naples (Italy) to London (England) and Paris (France) over the course of a decade. She argues that women styled themselves as living statues, an aesthetic and philosophical choice intertwined with the experiments and innovations of artists working in other media like painting, literature and music during the same period. Although neoclassicism is often considered a cold, rational, and masculine movement, Rauser’s analysis shows that neoclassism can be recast as a feminine, progressive movement, with women as ideals and allegories, artistic agents and patrons.
Also aspects of plantation fashion, neoclassical fashion inspired by enslaved women, primitivism and the "dress á la sauvage" are studied. The neoclassical style of clothing, often referred to as robe à la grecque, empire style, or “undress”, is marked by a sheer, white, high-waisted muslin dress worn with minimal undergarments, often accessorized with a cashmere shawl. This style represented a dramatic departure from that of previous decades and was short lived: by the 1820s, corsets, silks, and hoop skirts were back in fashion.

- This book traces the history of the Fawcett Society from its origins in the suffrage movement in 1866 right up to its role as a cutting edge organisation campaigning for equality 150 years later. While the figure of Millicent Fawcett dominates the first sixty years, her place has been taken by a whole series of exceptional women since then. The author’s insider/outsider viewpoint allows a picture of both the triumphs (including the birth of the Women’s Library) and the challenges of running an organisation fighting for equality from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first.

- Description
- This book charts the history of the women's liberation movement in Scotland in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century. Based on documentary evidence and oral testimony from feminist activists, this book argues for the importance of looking at the movement from the grassroot perspective, as well as locating the struggle for women's liberation in the local context, shifting emphasis away from large cities like London. The book uncovers the reach of the movement and considers what case studies of women's liberation e.g. on abortion and violence against women can tell us about the ways in which the development of the movement has been portrayed. In the appendices: short biographies of oral history interviewees and the seven demands of the women's libration movement in Britain. Paperback. First published in hardback 2014.
