- Description

- Description
- This history explores the nature of postwar advocacy for women's higher education. Eisenmann illuminates the impact of this advocacy in the postwar era, identifying a link between women's activism during World War II and the women's movement of the late 1960s. Though the postwar period has been portrayed as an era of domestic retreat for women, Eisenmann finds otherwise as she explores areas of institution building and gender awareness. In an era uncomfortable with feminism, this generation advocated individual decision making rather than collective action by professional women, generally conceding their complicated responsibilities as wives and mothers. By redefining our understanding of activism and assessing women's efforts within the context of their milieu, this innovative work reclaims an era often denigrated for its lack of attention to women.

- Description
- In this work, David Raub Snyder offers an investigation into the German army’s prosecution and punishment of sex offenders during the Second World War. In so doing, Snyder restores balance to the literature regarding the military administration of justice under Hitler and to the historiography of sexuality and the Third Reich. Although scholars have devoted considerable attention to military offenses, the literature is largely silent about crimes punishable under civilian law. In many cases, the Wehrmacht’s response to rape, sexual assault, homosexual “offenses,” child molestation, incest, “racial defilement,” and bestiality often depended on the willingness of the offender to continue to bear arms for his country. Snyder notes that, contrary to conventional wisdom, soldiers on the eastern front often received severe punishments for sexual assaults on Soviet civilians. He demonstrates how military expedience and military justice became entangled and conflicted during the war.

- Description
- In the last years of World War II there were 24 relatively small women's labour camps under the governance of the concentration camp of Neuengamme in North-West Germany. Of the 13700 prisoners, about one third were Jewish women. The women had to work in factories and on building sites. In april of 1945 the women were transported to Bergen-Belsen, and many of them died there in the last few days of the war. This study is based on interviews with more than 80 of the 120 women who were still alive in the period of this study, 1998 -2002. The emphasis of the study is on survival strategies of the women in the face of national socialist policies of forced labour and the conditions (hunger, violence. lack of cloths and health care) in the concentrationcamps. Ellger also pays attention to the histories of individual women, Jewish and non-Jewish prisoners and SS-guards, during and after the war.
