- Description
- This collection of essays examine the HBO program Girls. Since its premiere in 2012, the series has garnered the attention of individuals from various walks of life. The show has been described in many terms: insightful, out-of-touch, brash, sexist, racist, perverse, complex, edgy, daring, provocative. Overall, there is no doubt that Girls has firmly etched itself in the fabric of early twenty-first-century popular culture. The essays in this book examine the show from various angles including: white privilege: body image: gender: culture: race: sexuality: parental and generational attitudes: third wave feminism: hipster, indie, and urban music as it relates to Generation Y and Generation X.

- Description
- This volume focuses on the work of exiled women writers and journalists as well as on gendered representations in the writing of both male and female exiled writers. The contributions are in English or German. The seventeen contributions set out to both celebrate and critically examine the concepts of gender and sexuality in exile in a wide range of texts by well-known and lesser known authors, and throw light on many different aspects of gendered authorship and gendered relations. The volume also looks at two bibliographic rarities: exile newspapers intended for and directed at a female readership. Table of contents: “Exemplary Lives”? Thoughts on Exile, Gender and Exile Writing / Katharina Prager: Gender and Kindertransport Memoirs / Andrea Hammel: Anna Seghers und die Moderne: Positionen aus der Expressionismusdebatte und den großen Exilromanen / Christine Ujma: Masculinity and Femininity in Anna Seghers’ and Bodo Uhse’s Mexican Exile Narratives / Trinidad Marín Villora: Carl und Alice Zuckmayer in Vermont: A Gendered Perspective / Birgit Maier-Katkin: Die Suche nach dem Ort: Veza Canettis Erzählung „Toogoods oder das Licht“ / Rosa Marta Gómez Pato: „Man wird, was man war erst ganz in der Emigration“: Veza und Elias Canetti in der Emigration in England ? - The cinema of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), that is, the cinema of its state-run studio DEFA, portrayed gender and sexuality in complex and contradictory ways. This collection addresses the treatment of gender and sexuality in the productions of DEFA across genres (from shorts and feature films to educational videos, television productions, and documentaries) and in light of social, political, and cultural contexts. It also investigates subjects, including films and directors that have received little scholarly attention and nonconformist representations of gender and sexual embodiments, identifications, and practices. Contents: Introduction: Sex and Socialism in East German Cinema - Kyle Frackman and Faye Stewart:

- Description
- The Danish director Lars von Trier is one of the world's most controversial filmmakers, and arguably so because of the depiction of women in his films. He has been criticized for subjecting his female characters to unacceptable levels of violence or reducing them to masochistic self-abnegation. At other times, it is the women in his films who are dominant or break out in violence.

- Description
- This volume explores the characteristics, backgrounds and effects of the collective perceptions of Anabaptist/Mennonite women, as well as their self-understanding, from the sixteenth into the nineteenth centuries, in a variety of case studies. This is not a gender study in the traditional sense. The theory of imagology sets the stage for the interpretation of the image of the European Mennonite sisters, acting within their religious, moral, cultural and social landscapes of Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, and the Ukraine (tsarist Russia).

- Description
- This volume sets out to investigate queer literature and cinema, exploring in particular the intersection of issues of gender and Lusophone culture. The essays collected here present individual case studies within a queer theoretical framework, examining the ways in which queer identities are constructed and addressed through different types of cultural production. More specifically, they consider Portuguese and Lusophone socio-cultural contexts and the representation of gender in popular culture, as well as the centrality of literature and cinema in the subversion of heteronormative social norms.
