- Cathy Berberian (1925-1983) was an American vocal performance artist, singer and composer who pioneered a way of composing with (and listening to) the voice in the musical worlds of Europe, North America and beyond. As a modernist muse for many avant-garde composers, she went on to embody the principles of postmodern thinking in her work.

- Description
- This collection of essays, written by musicologists and ethnomusicologists, provide a cross-cultural and cross-historical view of the roles women have played as creators and performers and the representation of women in world, popular, and western art music. Organized in five sections, the readings deal with a broad spectrum of topics and approaches about women, gender, and sexuality in music across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas from the twelfth century to the present. Included are themes as class and sexual politics in domestic and professional music making, the sequestration of female musical performance, the lament, gender identity through performance, and women singers as empowered voices of the people.

- Description
- Jackson traces the lives and influence of female blues singers, black and white, and celebrates the power of their music, which has been overlooked, she says. The women she limns, including pioneers Mamie Desdoumes, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith, jazz singers Billie Holiday and Etta James, and eventually pop singers Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and Janis Joplin, refused to follow the rules about how women should behave in society. The blues allowed women to express emotions and points of view to general American culture when women had little say outside the home, and women's blues constitute a commentary about the often-complicated lives of women in an era of great social change. In conclusion, Jackson insists that the legacy of the blues lives on in contemporary performers' music and attitude toward life. Hence, she finds a blues sensibility--a struggle for emotional freedom--even in Joni Mitchell.

- Description
- Calling this book 'the autobiography of my voice,' soprano Fleming details the years of study it took to master the art of vocal production and the discipline that brought her international renown. A former manager deemed her 'the single most ambitious singer he has ever known,' and given the tenacity with which she faced early setbacks—'I have a noble history of being rejected from a lot of places,' she writes—his comment is understandable. After her first big break in 1990 (as the Countess in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro with the Houston Grand Opera), Fleming's rise to the top was steady. But she's quick to point out that the life of an opera star is not always glitter and glamour: the business side of singing—scheduling performances, arranging interviews and recordings, choosing a repertoire and marketing herself—is arduous.

- Description
- In this book Feldstein examines black women performers, illuminating the risks they took, their roles at home and abroad, and the ways that they raised the issue of gender amid their demands for black liberation. Feldstein focuses on six women who made names for themselves in the music, film, and television industries: Ninam Simone, Lena Horne, Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln, Diahann Carroll, and Cicely Tyson. These women did not simply mirror black activism: their performances helped constitute the era's political history. Makeba connected America's struggle for civil rights to the fight against apartheid in South Africa, while Simone sparked controversy with her incendiary lyrics.

- Ronnie Gilbert had a long career as a singer, actor, playwright, therapist, and independent woman. Her work for political and social change was central to her role as a performer. Raised in Depression-era New York City by leftist, working-class, secular Jewish parents, Gilbert is best known as a member of the Weavers. Her contralto and vibrant stage presence enriched the celebrated group and propelled Gilbert into a second singing career with lesbian singer Holly Near in the 1980s and '90s.
