- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- Description
- This book examines the contemporary feminist movement in Singapore through an in-depth case study of the locally-based Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE). It examines the meanings attached to feminist activism by AWARE members, including the use of the label 'feminist' as a self-identifier by both individuals as well as the organisation as a whole. By exploring the range of activities that AWARE has been involved in since the mid-1980s, the text describes in detail the fraught relationship between feminism and the state in Singapore. The author uses the framework of transnational feminism to explore the ways in which gender, race/ethnicity, and class intersect in the construction of historically and culturally specific feminisms.

- Description
- This book traces the history of women’s political involvement in Southern Africa, in anti-colonial struggles and against apartheid, analyzes the post-colonial outcomes and examines the strategies that have been employed by women’s movements to gain a foothold in politics. It looks in detail at the experiences of women both in and with the women’s wings of political parties through the early years of independence up to today, discusses the successes and failures of national machinery for the advancement of women and analyses the activities of women’s movements over time. Extensive material from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa is compared and juxtaposed, as women politicians and women’s movements learned from each others’ experiences over time. The study also critically addresses the uneasy relationship between the women’s movements and the state, and between women activists and women politicians as they have negotiated cooptation, integration and exclusion. Based on an extensive literature review and innumerable interviews with women politicians and activists as well as fieldwork, and spanning half a century and half a continent, the historical depth and geographical spread of the study put it in a class of its own.

- The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the social and institutional changes unfolding in Latin America and the Caribbean. The paper postulates that the new modes of democratic governance manifest themselves in the rules and regulations that govern the relationships between social actors in various scenarios, in particular between the State and society and between the State, the market and the family. These changes also create opportunities to transform gender roles. At the same time, this paper shows how the shift in relationships between men and women increases the foundations for the support of democratic governance by ensuring that high-level discussions and policy-making effectively mainstream the results achieved and problems overcome in the area of gender inequity.

- This book explains the high level of current concern for the under-representation of women in politics. It explores the reasons behind recent favourable attitudes towards sharing political power with women in the Netherlands, and in other European countries. It identifies the many obstacles and strategies and it points out future expectations about the representation of women in Europe. Under which circumstances can political players be influenced to change institutions and procedures in favour of newcomers to politics. The current ‘crisis of politics’ opens a window of opportunity for changing the underlying male-biased structures.

- Description
- ‘Good governance’ became the mantra in international development debates in the 1990s with state reform and ‘improving’ public administration epitomising key approaches to achieving good governance. But were these approaches sufficient to make governance participatory, accountable and responsive to citizens and respectful of their rights? .In contrast to dominant views of governance as a series of technical interventions to improve state functioning, this book looks at governance as political process. It investigates how women among marginalised groups can stake their claim to participation in governance, and create accountability of governance institutions to their interests and rights. .The book is based on action research undertaken in eight country contexts across two regions, Southern Africa and South Asia, by sixteen civil society organisations. It provides insights into the changing role of civil society organisations representing women’s interests in facilitating ‘voice’ of the most marginalised women, and in developing strategies, methods and tools to bring poor women’s voices to governance institutions in order to ensure responsiveness in policy formulation and implementation.

- Voltairine de Cleyre belongs to a group of late-nineteenth-century freethinkers, anarchists, and sex-radicals whose writing continues to be excluded from the U.S. literary and historical canon. Gates of Freedom considers de Cleyre's speeches, letters, and essays, including her most well known essay, 'Sex Slavery.' Part I explores her contributions to the anarchist movement, her analyses of justice and violence, and her views on women, sexuality, and the body. DeLamotte demonstrates both de Cleyre's literary significance and the importance of her work to feminist theory, women's studies, literary and cultural studies, U.S. history, and contemporary social and cultural analysis. Part II presents a thematically organized selection of de Cleyre's writings, on different subjects.

- Feminists from 1848 to the present have viewed the Seneca Falls convention as the birth of the women's rights movement in the United States and beyond. In this book Judith Wellman offers a full-length account of this historic meeting in its contemporary context. The convention succeeded by uniting powerful elements of the antislavery movement, radical Quakers, and the campaign for legal reform under a common cause. Wellman shows that these three strands converged not only in Seneca Falls, but also in the life of women's rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

- This dissertation studies state feminism in a non-western nation state. This volume focuses on the activities and roles of the Women's Bureau of the Ministry of Labour in post-World War II Japan. While state feminism theory possesses a strong capability to examine state-society relationships in terms of feminist policymaking, it tends to neglect a state's activity in improving women's status and rights in non-western nations where the feminist movements are apathetic or antagonistic to the state and where the state also creates a vertical relationship with feminist groups.

- Politics of Piety is an analysis of Islamist cultural politics through the ethnography of a thriving, grassroots women's piety movement in the mosques of Cairo, Egypt. Unlike those organized Islamist activities that seek to seize or transform the state, this is a moral reform movement whose orthodox practices are commonly viewed as inconsequential to Egypt's political landscape. Saba Mahmood's compelling exposition of these practices challenges this assumption by showing how the ethical and the political are indelibly linked within the context of such movements.

- In this book women from around the world tell how they fought to ensure that the political and economic changes in the developing world would benefit women as well as men. Women helped to create one of the most important social movements of the last century—the global women’s movement. This movement saw a rare collaboration between women from the global North and the global South, as they worked together to alter the established order both inside the UN and in NGOs, national and local governments, universities, think tanks, and on-the-ground development projects. .In these testimonies, a distinguished group of 27 pioneering women from 12 countries tell their own stories, revealing the moments when they realized that they could challenge the received wisdom of the day, and the struggles involved in turning their ideas into actions. These accounts come from women involved in creating the four major UN conferences on women held from 1975 to 1995, women scholars, women in institutions that provide development funds, and women in development agencies.

- Description
- Dever analyses the politics of feminist theory by looking at its popular, activist, and academic modes, from the liberation movements of the 1970s to gender and queer studies. Using key moments in the history of modern feminism, consciousness-raising, best-selling books like Sexual Politics by Kate Millett, and media representations of women's struggle for equality, she outlines debates of psychoanalysis, sexuality, and activism, and argues that a fundamental scepticism toward abstraction has been vital to the development of the movement.
