- Description
- This book focuses on the three roles common to female organists in nineteenth-century England: recitalist, church musician, and composer. Barger utilizes many primary sources to piece together a picture of Stirling, as well as to present pictures from the lives of her female colleagues. Nineteenth-century newspapers and journals provide not only specific references to musical events, but also a view of the larger musical world and issues affecting nineteenth-century London organists. Works of fiction about musical heroines illustrate society's views about the role of music in women's lives and the consequences experienced by those women who did not abide by societal norms. Finally, perusal of published music by Stirling and her colleagues gives insight into compositional styles and practices and, when publicized in reviews, the value placed on these works. Issues with special relevance to female organists are explored in detail: inequality of education, the High-Church Oxford Movement, the process by which organists were chosen for church positions and the sexual politics of composition.

- Louise Pound (1872–1958) was a literary scholar, athlete, musician, and a women’s sports advocate. She is remembered for her work in the field of linguistics and folklore and for her role as the first woman president of the Modern Language Association. A member of a distinguished Nebraska family Louise completed her undergraduate education at the University of Nebraska. When American universities wouldn’t admit her for graduate study, she went on to obtain a PhD in Heidelberg, Germany. She returned to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to teach in the English department for the next forty-five years. As a scholar Louise crusaded for the serious study of American English and founded the field’s leading journal, demolished a powerfully defended approach to the study of American folk song, and fought tirelessly to open athletic and professional opportunities for women. She was, in short, what one admirer called a “universal wonder.” She befriended and played an influential role in the life of the young Willa Cather during Cather’s years at the University of Nebraska.

- Description
- With entries dating from 1872 to 2013, the latest in The Times' series of anthologies of its obituaries focuses attention on almost two centuries of groundbreaking achievements by more than 100 women, from around the world. Mary Sommerville (d. 1872), the pioneering mathematician and scientist with whose obituary the anthology begins, would have been astonished by what many of the other women remembered here achieved—not least one of the more prominent graduates of the Oxford college that was named Somerville after her—Margaret Thatcher (d. 2013). The collection also recalls the lives of actresses, aviators, botanists, doctors, British royalty, musicians, Nobel Prize winners, novelists, travelers, U.S. First Ladies, and many other prominent women.

- Description
- Representing a historical cross-section of performance and training in Western music since the seventeenth century, this publication brings to light the private and performance lives of five women musicians and composers. Guiding readers through the thirty years war in central Europe, elite courts in Germany, urban salons in Paris, nazi control of Germany and Austria, and American musical life today, as well as personal experiences of marriage, motherhood, and widowhood, the author provides insights into the culture in which each woman was active: duchess Sophie-Elisabeth of Braunschweig-Lueneberg (harpsichordist), Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre (composer), Josephine Lang (pianist and composer), baroness Maria Bach (composer and pianist), Ann Schein (pianist). Mining musical autographs, unpublished letters and press reviews, interviews, and music archives in the United States and Europe, the author probes each musician's social and economic status, her education and musical training, the cultural expectations within the traditions and restrictions of each woman's society, and other factors.

- Description
- Through musical analysis of compositions written between the mid-twelfth to late nineteenth centuries, this volume celebrates the achievements of eight composers, all women: Hildegard of Bingen, Maddalena Casulana, Barbara Strozzi, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Marianne Martines, Josephine Lang, Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann, and Amy Beach. . .Written by music theorists and musicologists, the essays provide in-depth critical-analytic explorations of representative compositions, often linking analytical observations with questions of meaning and sociohistorical context. Each essay is introduced by a brief biographical sketch of the composer by the editors.
