- Description

Chronicling shifting attitudes toward friendship from the Bible and the Romans to the Enlightenment to the women’s rights movements of the ‘60s up to Sex and the City and Bridesmaids, they reveal how the concept of female friendship has been linked to social and cultural movements that have defined human history.

- 'Sex and the City' was an instant hit when it was first aired on American Home Box Office (HBO) channel in 1998: it has gone from cult phenomenon to award-winning success and now has a huge international fanbase. Among the issues explored by the contributors of the volume on the single young women Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha, are sex and modern relationships, male archetypes and the search for Mr Right: fashion and fashion journalism: third-wave feminism, citizenship and the single girl: television and fairytales and the crossover between television and film. The book also explores the fan culture surrounding the show and features contributors' personal responses to the Sex and the City location tour. It includes a complete episode guide to the first five series, a location guide to Manhattan and a map of Sex and the City's New York.

- Harriet Hosmer (1830 1908) was one of the country's most respected artists, credited with opening the field of sculpture to women. In this biography, Culkin explores Hosmer's life and work and places her in the context of a notable group of expatriate writers and artists who gathered in Rome in the nineteenth century. In 1852 Hosmer moved from Boston to Rome, where she shared a house with actress Charlotte Cushman and soon formed close friendships with expatriates as Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and fellow sculptors John Gibson,. References to Hosmer or characters inspired by her appear in the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, and Kate Field among others. Culkin argues that Hosmer's success was made possible by her extensive network of supporters, including her famous friends, boosters of American gentility, and women's rights advocates. Culkin also addresses Hosmer's critique of women's position in nineteenth-century culture through her sculpture, the role Hosmer's relationships with women played in her life and success, and the complex position a female artist occupied within a country increasingly interested in proving its gentility.

- In 2009 Traister started thebook about the twenty-first century phenomenon of the American single woman. It was the year the proportion of American women who were married dropped below fifty percent: and the median age of first marriages, which had remained between twenty and twenty-two years old for nearly a century (1890–1980), had risen to twenty-seven. But the phenomenon of the single woman in America is not a new one. Historically, when women were given options beyond early heterosexual marriage, the results were massive social change : temperance, abolition, secondary education, and more. Today, only twenty percent of Americans are married by age twenty-nine, compared to nearly sixty percent in 1960.

She discusses how literary writing functions to enact and negotiate a series of relationships between women: daughter-mother, mother-daughter, lesbian lover-lesbian lover, writer-reader, and reader-writer. She shows how writing is a component of interpersonal relationships and how relationships are central to the construction of personal and social identity.

- This book examines friendships between gay men and straight women, and also between lesbians and straight men, and shows how these 'intersectional' friendships serve as a barometer for shifting social norms, particularly regarding gender and sexual orientation. Based on author Anna Muraco's interviews, the work challenges two widespread assumptions: that men and women are fundamentally different and that men and women can only forge significant bonds within romantic relationships. Intersectional friendships challenge a variety of social norms, Muraco says, including the limited roles that men and women are expected to play in one another's lives.

- Description
- This book opens a window into the lives of British spinsters in the mid-seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries, assessing the opportunities open to them and the restrictions placed upon them within different social classes, occupations, and periods. Hill examines how often spinsters were able to earn enough money to live independently, She looks at the part single women played in religious organisations and the role of friendship and letter-writing in their daily lives. She describes the nature of close relationships between women, some lesbian but many others not. Exploring the spinsters' possibilities of escape from restrictive lives, particularly by emigration or crossdressing, she discusses how successful these were. She provides details about the degree of surveillance single women suffered from the authorities and how often they were seen as a threat to social order. Finally she addresses the question of whether all spinsters of this era were suffering victims or potential viragoes, or neither.

- Description
- Inthis book Kelly Valen pulls back the curtain on female relationships, revealing the troubling findings from her survey of more than three thousand women from all walks of life. Demonstrating the paradox of how we both support and sabotage one another, Valen’s research shows that although the vast majority of women report having at least one girl-friendship they wouldn’t want to live without, well over half approach female camaraderie with wariness or flat-out distrust and admit that they are unable—or unwilling—to extend themselves to certain types of women. An overwhelming majority say they have endured serious, life-altering knocks from other females, and a solid 97 percent of those polled believe it is crucial that we improve the female culture in the United States.

- Description
- At the height of her career, actress Charlotte Cushman (1816-76) was one of the most famous women in the English-speaking world. Cushman challenged Victorian notions of gender in her stage portrayals of male characters and of strong, androgynous female characters. Offstage, she was a powerful businesswoman who supported her family, women lovers, and friends. Merrill examines Cushman's personal correspondence to shed new light on the actress's relationships and in turn on our understandings of the nature of women's 'romantic friendships.' She demonstrates how Cushman's androgynous presence served as a symbol to many of her contemporaries, and revealed their multiple and often contradictory attitudes toward female performers, women, and the unspeakable possibilities of same-sex desire. The biography draws upon unpublished archival material as well as on current critical work to view Cushman's career, relationships, and posthumous reception. When Romeo Was a Woman examines as autobiographical performance Cushman's own narratives, the stories she authorized others to write, and the letters she wrote to intimates.
