- Description
- Current en former prisoners, activists and academics describe how race, gender, ability and sexuality are lived in captivity. They argue that trans/queer liberation and prison abolition must be grown together. This second, revised and expanded edition includes a new foreword by CeCe McDonald which explores the importance books like 'Captive Genders' played for her during her incarceration. From her prison cell, Chelsea E. Manning writes about the relationship between military and the prison system. Janetta Johnson and Toshio Meronek argue that supporting people after they are released is vital to abolition. Kalaniopua Young explores the histories of colonialism, forced gender normativity and prison. - Description
- This book is an analysis of the abuses that took place at Abu Ghraib based on first-hand participant-observations of the courts - martials of Lynndie England and Sabrina Harman. It examines the trials themselves, including interactions with soldiers and defense teams, documents pertaining to the courts-martials, US government reports and photographs from Abu Ghraib, in order to challenge the view that the abuses were carried out at the hands of a few rogue soldiers. With a keen focus on gender and sexuality as prominent aspects of the abuses themselves, as well as the ways in which they were portrayed and tried, the book engages with modern feminist thought and contemporary social theory in order to analyse the manner in which the abuses were framed, whilst also exploring the various lived realities of Abu Ghraib by both prisoners and soldiers alike.

- The Weathermen --a U.S.-based, revolutionary splinter group of Students for a Democratic Society-- advocated the overthrow of the government and capitalism, in the social and cultural environment of the New Left during the late 1960s. and toward that end, carried out a campaign of bombings, jailbreaks, and riots throughout the United States. In With the Weathermen Stern traces her involvement with this group, and her transformation from a shy, married graduate student into a go-go dancing, drugs, sex, street-fighting 'macho mama.' She describes the attractions and difficulties of joining a collective radical group and in maintaining a position within it. Stern's memoir offers a description of the raw and rough social dynamics of this community, from its strict demands to 'smash monogamy,' to its sometimes enforced orgies, and to the demeaning character assassination that was led by the group's top members. She provides a distinctly personal and female perspective on the destructive social functionality and frequently contradictory attitudes toward gender roles and women's rights within the New Left.

- Description
- The number of men in American prisons has doubled in the past 20 years: the number of women incarcerated in the U.S.—now approaching a million—has quintupled during the same period. Journalist Rathbone fought in the courts for years to secure access to these women, and her passion and tenacity are on display in this clear-eyed account of life inside Massachusetts's MCI-Framingham, the oldest women's prison in the country. The numbing sameness of women's crimes—nonviolent offenses, mostly drug-related, make up three-fourths of female convictions—is transcended by Rathbone's focus on a handful of individual stories, The book avoids the temptation to frame these women as mere passive victims of a system or culture gone awry, although Rathbone does not hesitate to expose inefficiency, thoughtlessness and even abuse at all levels of the correctional bureaucracy. Poor psychological care, mandatory sentencing laws and institutionalized sexual exploitation also come in for heavy, thoughtful criticism.

- This exploratory study examined dimensions of staff-inmate sexual contact in a correctional facility in Hawaii through two focus group interviews with imprisoned women. The women described three types of sexual abuse in prison: 'trading,' 'love,' and 'in the line of duty.' Findings include the women's account of these forms of abuse and their perceptions of responsibility for staff-inmate sexual contact in correctional institutions. The women's beliefs about factors contributing to sexual abuse of female inmates, including job expectations of and power issues among adult correctional officers (ACO's), and the consequences of reporting abuse are also discussed. Given the vulnerability of female inmates and the power dynamics that typify the prison context, further research on this problem is warranted.

She was one of the greatest orators of her day, was a key organizer of labour strikes for the Industrial Workers of the World (familiar known as Wobblies), a leader of free speech battles, and a major figure in labor defense. She wrote a weekly newspaper column for twenty-six years, as well as political pamphlets, an autobiography, and a jail memoir. One of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union, she ran for Congress and was the first female chairman of the Communist Party of the United States of America.

- This book is a study of the lives of fourteen men who raped women unknown to them. The author documents, compares, and contrasts their experiences from boyhood to adulthood and eventual incarceration. She argues that stranger-rapists do not fit existing portrayals of them as predatory monsters or misogynist everymen. Instead she positions stranger-rape as a matter of experiences of pain and powerlessness rather than of male power and control. The author recognizes rapists and rape in their particularity and complexity in the hope that critical thinking about their lives and about their experiences in penal contexts and programs may eventually lead to what one respondent called his ‘road to redemption.’

- In this publication, the author draws upon four years of on-the-ground research in a major US women's prison to uncover why tougher drug policies have so greatly affected those incarcerated there, and how the very nature of punishment in women's detention centers has been deeply altered as a result. Through interviews with prisoners and state personnel, she reveals that popular so-called ‘habilitation' drug treatment programs force women to accept a view of themselves as inherently damaged, aberrant addicts in order to secure an earlier release.

- Description
- 'Feminism and Criminal Justice' is a study of the involvement of the women's movement in England and Wales with criminal justice policy in the period c. 1920-70. Challenging the assumption that feminist interest in criminal justice only began with the emergence of campaigns over rape and domestic violence and of feminist criminology in the 1970s, the book argues that criminal justice matters have been a long-term concern of the women's movement. Taking the topic from the 'suffragette' era to the early days of 'second wave' feminism, the book traces a network of individuals and organizations that took a special interest in this area of policy and examines their campaigns. A wide range of topics are covered including youth justice, the law on prostitution, the campaign for women jurors, the care of victims, women professionals and volunteers in the justice system and the movement for the abolition of the death penalty. - In February 2003, Jones and her fellow NGO relief workers watched with disbelief and horror as Fox News declared the American war in Afghanistan a success—the Taliban totally defeated, all Afghan women 'liberated' and the infrastructure completely restored. The reality they knew on the ground in Kabul was starkly different. Jones presents her version of the events in this book, which tours Kabul's streets, private homes, schools and women's prison. The political and military history of Afghanistan, as well as its cultural and religious traditions, inform Jones's daily interactions and observations. Describing an English class she taught, Jones says, 'Once, after I explained what blind date meant, a woman said, 'Like my wedding.' ' Jones focuses particularly on Afghan women, whose lives are often permeated by violence.

- The mainstream reproductive rights movement, largely dominated by white women and consumed with protecting the right to abortion, has failed to respond adequately to the policing, criminalization, and incarceration of large numbers of poor people and people of color. This book places issues of race, class, and gender at the center of its reproductive rights and social justice agenda by focusing on a key concern among women of color and poor communities today: the difficulty of maintaining families and sustaining community in the face of increasing criminalization. .Women of color have articulated a broad reproductive rights agenda embedded in issues of equality and social justice. They have challenged coercive population policies, demanded access to safe and accessible birth control and asserted their right to economic and political resources to maintain healthy children. .This book discusses the policing of bodies by examining the experiences of women prisoners, women with AIDS in correctional facilities, women in systems of prostitution, immigrant women and women of color.

- This book puts incarcerated women in dialogue with scholars, artists, educators, and activists who live outside of prisons but work on issues connected to the prison industrial complex. Women make up the fastest-growing group within the U.S. prison population, yet prison scholarship largely overlooks the struggles of incarcerated women, and their voices are often silenced both in and out of the prison infrastructure. From the vantage points of those both inside and outside of prisons, this collection of essays and art illuminates many of the experiences and concerns of incarcerated women, including abuse and rape: the policing of women: incarcerated motherhood: mental health issues in prisons: incarcerated women’s artistic and cultural production: and prisons’ impact on families, health, and sexuality.

All have extraordinarily high rates of sexual and intimate partner violence and child sexual abuse. This book looks at the problem of sexual and intimate partner violence through cases, observing the role that institutions play in facilitating and perpetuating gender based violence and provides an understanding about the ways in which institutional structures create an environment that facilitates and perpetuates gender based violence. The authors also discuss the interpersonal dimensions and individual responses to sexual violence within which the #MeToo movement has developed.
