- Description
- A collection of writings on how the structures of power have exerted systematic governance over women in Africa. It addresses how the rhetorical devices of tradition and modernity have played important roles in the control and appropriation of African women's bodies. The chapters draw on history, literature, political science, journalism, sociology, comparative studies, and women and gender studies to offer multidisciplinary perspectives from which to understand the diversity of women's experiences, gender issues, and sexualities as they intersect with class, race, ethnicity, and nationality. This volume not only shows how the macro-narratives of colonialism and post-colonialism provide frameworks for understanding the micro-narratives of empowerment and disempowerment of women, but also considers resistance strategies women have used to guard against the subjugation of their bodies and sexualities. Themes covered include constructions of African motherhood and womanhood, femininity and health, gender and sexual representations and contestations, and gendered nationalism and culture.

- Exploring the application of quotas and affirmative action at an institutional or organizational level from different perspectives, the contributions inthis book provide an understanding of the complexity and controversial nature of policies and actions in different countries. Focussing particularly on gender-related initiatives, but raising questions pertinent to other aspects of diversity, the contributions from international researchers investigate variances between and differing justifications for policies. - This book provides an overview of the gender rules encountered in Europe in the period between approximately 500 and 1500 C.E. The essays speak to how best to uncover the experiences of ordinary people from archives formed mainly by and about elite males, and how to combine social histories of lived experiences with cultural histories of gendered discourses and identities. The collection focuses on Western Europe in the Middle Ages but offers some consideration of medieval Islam and Byzantium.

- Description
- Within the gender studies binaries like female versus male and gay versus straight have been problematized as a symbol of the stigmatization and erasure of non-normative subjects and practices. This volume offers different perspectives on both these binaries and other dichotomies that penetrate the gendered and sexual lives of speakers. Several chapters focus on the limiting or misleading qualities of analyses of binaries, while others suggest that binaries are a crucial component of social meaning within particular communities of study. The book advocates for a re-theorization of the binary that provides more complex and contextually-grounded engagement with speakers' own orientations to dichotomous systems. Finally, it is argued that researchers must be careful to avoid the assumption that our own preconceptions about binary social structures will be shared by the communities we study.

- Collection of articles discussing gender, with examples of gender constructive processes within various contexts and by means of diverse methodologies. It addresses issues such as gender performativity, its variances depending on their historical, social and cultural contexts and the rituals, representations and institutions involved in gender performances. It demonstrates that it is impossible to consider gender as a fixed biological trait. The authors propose to look at gender performance as an ongoing process in which femininities and masculinities imply dynamic intersections with categories such as nationality, ethnicity, class, sexuality and age. With cases from South Africa, United States and Brazil.

- Description
- This book explores the extent to which gendered approaches are evident and effective in spatial development in selected European countries. Beginning with an introduction to theories and concepts of gender, space and development, the book includes a brief historical review of gender in spatial planning and development throughout Europe in general, and an overview of different national frameworks in European countries, comparing legal, organisational and cultural similarities and differences. This is followed by a reflection on how simplifications and stereotypes of gender concepts are used in the practice of spatial development. The main part of the book offers a transnational discussion of planning practices on selected thematic topics. It starts with gender-sensitivity in urban master planning and at neighbourhood level referring to different types of planning manuals. Furthermore, the book focuses on gender-sensitive evaluation in urban planning as well as international agendas for sustainable development as a framework for a new generation of gender equality policies.

- This volume focuses on the work of exiled women writers and journalists as well as on gendered representations in the writing of both male and female exiled writers. The contributions are in English or German. The seventeen contributions set out to both celebrate and critically examine the concepts of gender and sexuality in exile in a wide range of texts by well-known and lesser known authors, and throw light on many different aspects of gendered authorship and gendered relations. Neither, however, has addressed the implications for women’s accumulation of assets and associated empowerment for transformational pathways to just cities.

The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations.

- This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture reflects the increase in research on the topic of gender over the past thirty years, showing that even the most familiar subjects take on new significance when viewed through the lens of gender. The wide range of entries explores how people have experienced and used concepts of womanhood and manhood in all sorts of obvious and subtle ways. The volume features 113 articles, 65 of which are new for this edition. Thematic articles address subjects such as sexuality, respectability, and paternalism and look at the role of gender in broader subjects, including the civil rights movement, country music, and sports. Topical entries highlight individuals such as Oprah Winfrey and the Grimke sisters, as well as historical events such as the capture of Jefferson Davis in a woman's dress and the Memphis sanitation workers' strike, with its slogan, 'I AM A MAN.' Bringing together scholarship on gender and the body, sexuality, labor, race, and politics, this volume offers new ways to view big questions in southern history and culture.

Through close readings of a wide range of reality programming, from Sister Wives to Ghost Adventures and Deadliest Warrior, the contributors think through questions of femininity and masculinity, as they relate to the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality. They connect the genre's combination of real people and surreal experiences, of authenticity and artifice, to the production of identity and norms of citizenship, the commodification of selfhood, and the naturalization of regimes of power. Whether portrayals of hoarders, or big-family programs such as 19 Kids and Counting, the contributors analyze reality television as a relevant site for the production and performance of gender.

- The final years of the twentieth century have produced new knowledge about women´s literacy. Building on and critiquing scholarship in literacy studies, composition studies, rhetorical theory, gender studies, postcolonial theory, and cultural studies, the contributors to this volume discuss what literacies are. Yet their strongest interest is in documenting and theorizing women´s lived experience of these literacies. They committed not just to telling stories or theorizing about them, but also to the women whose stories they report and analyze, including historical figures such as Louisa May Alcott, and Dorothy West: feminist writers of the sixties and seventies: or women in other parts of the world, such as those in Vietnam struggling with English and Japanese: or in South Africa dealing with the legacy of apartheid: or contemporary women in the mountains of North Carolina, the plains of Nebraska, and the cities of Tunisia: or old women in Korea finally telling stories of their sexual exploitation during World -War II.

- Description
- This volume theorizes the modern state and its intricate relationship to security, identity politics and gender, including scholars from International Relations (IR), Postcolonial Studies and Development Studies. First it answers whether the concept of a 'gendered state' is generic or if some states are particularly gendered in their identities and interests and with what implications for the type of citizenship, society and international security. Second it looks at the theoretical significance of the gendered state for current IR scholarship. Finally it explains to what extent postcolonial states are distinctive from metropolitan states with regard to gender. .

- Description
- This book engages scholarly essays, poems, and creative writings that examine the meanings of race, gender, and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression. Each chapter in this volume critically interrogates the notion of identity as socially constructed, yet interconnected and shaped by cultural associations. The shaping of an individual’s identity, communication, and worldview can be read, shaped, and understood through life, art, popular culture, mass media, and cross-cultural interactions, among other things.

We need to look at the activities and the privileges of the advantaged - the 'TED women' of the crisis -- as much as the victimization of the disadvantaged - to fully grasp the interplay between gender and economy in this age of restoration .

More specifically, they consider Portuguese and Lusophone socio-cultural contexts and the representation of gender in popular culture, as well as the centrality of literature and cinema in the subversion of heteronormative social norms.

Die geschiedenis wordt in dit boek verkend en bestrijkt de periode vanaf de zeventiende eeuw tot heden, waarin de betekenis van sekse steeds opnieuw wordt gedefinieerd, bewaakt en betwist.
