- Description
- Prejudice is often not a conscious attitude: because of ingrained habits in relating to the world, one may act in prejudiced ways toward others without explicitly understanding the meaning of one’s actions. Similarly, one may know how to do certain things, like ride a bicycle, without being able to articulate in words what that knowledge is. These are examples of what Alexis Shotwell discusses in this book as phenomena of “implicit understanding.” Presenting an analysis of this concept, she highlights how this kind of understanding may be used to ground political and social change, such as combating racism in its less overt and more deep-rooted forms. She begins by distinguishing four basic types of implicit understanding: nonpropositional, skill-based, or practical knowledge: embodied knowledge: potentially propositional knowledge: and affective knowledge. She then develops the notion of a racialized and gendered “common sense,” , and clarifies the idea of embodied knowledge by showing how it operates in the realm of aesthetics. She also examines the role that both negative affects, like shame, and positive affects, like sympathy, can play in moving us away from racism and toward political solidarity and social justice.

- Description
- This collection provides a core introduction to Braidotti's nomadic theory and its innovative formulations, which playfully engage with Deleuze, Foucault, Irigaray, and a host of political and cultural issues. Arranged thematically, essays begin with such concepts as sexual difference and embodied subjectivity and follow with explorations in technoscience, feminism, postsecular citizenship, and the politics of affirmation. Inspired yet not confined by Deleuzian vitalism she emphasizes affects, imagination, and creativity and the politics of radical immanence. Incorporating ideas from Nietzsche and Spinoza as well, Braidotti establishes a critical-theoretical framework equal parts critique and creation. Ever mindful of the perils of defining difference in terms of denigration and the related tendency to subordinate sexualized, racialized, and naturalized others, she explores the eco-philosophical implications of nomadic theory, feminism, and the irreducibility of sexual difference and sexuality. Her dialogue with technoscience is crucial to nomadic theory, which deterritorializes the established understanding of what counts as human, along with our relationship to animals, the environment, and changing notions of materialism.

- When first published in 1972 this book was the first to address critical questions about women and mental health. Combining interviews with patients with an analysis of women's roles in history, society and myth, Chesler concludes that there is a terrible double standard when it comes to mental health. In this new edition, she addresses many of the most relevant issues to women and mental health today, including eating disorders, social acceptance of antidepressants, addictions, sexuality, postpartum depression and more.

- Description
- To understand masculine and feminine social and political history in the second half of the 20th century, one must understand the lexical history of the term gender, which was introduced in 1955 when John Money as a concept of gender role to refer to the masculine or feminine presentation of individuals whose genital organs, by reason of birth defect, were anatomically neither completely male or completely female, but hermaphroditic. .In this book, Money explores the history of gender differentiation and its impact on contemporary, postmodern social constructionist explanations of male and female. He argues that the nature vs nurture dichotomy should be abandoned in favour of a paradigm of nature/critical period/nurture. The book further discusses how some gender differences are phylogenetically shared by all people and others are ontologically unique to an individual.

- Description
- Repo shows that gender is not originally a feminist term, but emerged from the study of intersex and transsexual persons in the fields of sexology and psychology in the1950s and 1960s. Prior to the 1950s gender was used to refer to various types of any number of phenomena. In the mid-twentieth century, gender shifted from being a nominator of types to designating the sexual order of things. Over the last sixty years, the notion of gender has become an entire field of knowledge. Feminists took up the term in the 1970s to challenge biological determinism. Gender has also become a key variable in social scientific surveys of different socio-political phenomena like voting, representation, employment, salaries, and parental leave decisions. Repo analyzes the strategies and tactics of power involved in the use of 'gender' in sexology and psychology, and subsequently its reversal and counter-deployment by feminists in the 1970s and 1980s. It critiques the emergence of gender in demographic science and the implications of this genealogy for feminist theory and politics today.
