- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- Goss examines how women's civic place has changed over the span of more than 120 years, how public policy has driven these changes, and why these changes matter for women and American democracy. Suffrage, which granted women the right to vote and invited their democratic participation, provided a dual platform for the expansion of women's policy agendas. As measured by women's groups' appearances before the U.S. Congress, women's collective political engagement continued to grow between 1920 and 1960—when many conventional accounts claim it declined—and declined after 1980, when it might have been expected to grow. .Goss suggests that ascriptive differences are not necessarily barriers to disadvantaged groups' capacity to be heard: that enhanced political inclusion does not necessarily lead to greater collective engagement: and that rights movements do not necessarily constitute the best way to understand the political participation of marginalized groups. She asks what women have gained—and perhaps lost—through expanded incorporation as well as whether single-sex organizations continue to matter in 21st-century America.

- Description
- Phyllis Chesler was a pioneer of Second Wave Feminism. Chesler and the women who came out between 1972-1975 brought class action lawsuits on behalf of economic discrimination, opened rape crisis lines and shelters for battered women, held marches and sit-ins for abortion and equal rights. They began the first-ever national and international public conversations about birth control and abortion, sexual harassment, violence against women, female orgasm, and a woman’s right to kill in self-defense. The feminist movement has changed over the years, but Chesler knew some of its first pioneers, including Gloria Steinem, Kate Millett and Andrea Dworkin. Some had been viewed as whores, witches, and madwomen, but were changing the world and becoming major players in history.

- Description
- Through an investigation of three feminist communitiesthe author shows how contemporary feminists react to the local environment currently shaping their identities, tactics, discourse, and relations with other feminist generations. By moving the analysis to the community level, Reger illustrates how feminism is simultaneously absent from the national, popular culture--'nowhere'--and diffused into the foundations of American culture--'everywhere.' Reger addresses some of the most debated topics concerning feminists in the twenty-first century. How do contemporary feminists think of the second-wave generation? Has contemporary feminism succeeded in addressing racism and classism, and created a more inclusive movement? How are contemporary feminists dealing with their legacy of gender, sex, and sexuality in a world of fluid identity and queer politics? The answers, she finds, vary by community.

- Description
- This book investigates the historical relationship between gay men and women's liberation. Their connection is more complex than several stories make us believe. Feminist women and gay men have had dynamic relations in popular thinking and historic practice. It examines these two groups’ alliances and obstacles over the past fifty years as well as their mutual communications. What have been the received views of the way these groups have or have not worked together politically? What historical evidence supports, contradicts or complicates these views? The findings help to understand the past and present of US women’s and LGBTQ movements as well as broader relations between social movements in general.

- Description
- Spare Rib remains one of the most iconic symbols of Second Wave Feminism, its influence far out-living the span of its publication (1972-1993). This collection examines various aspects of the magazine in order to explore the ways in which it has influenced society in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, as well as the lives of individual readers. By analysing articles from a post-feminist perspective and using cross-generational interviews of Spare Rib readers the significance and endurance of the publication is demonstrated.
