- Description
- 'In all countries of the world, especially in high-income countries, women declare a higher level of life satisfaction than men when they experience similar conditions (for example, pay and working conditions), but score lower on measures that capture short-term positive and negative emotions, and suffer from higher levels of depression. It is true that the advantage of women in terms of happiness and life satisfaction is not uniform along the life cycle: women are less happy than men the age of 18, happier than men afterwards and until their fifties, and less again thereafter. .The positive gap in life satisfaction is not explained by women’s situation on the labour market, their income, education, personality traits or other personal features or living conditions. On the contrary, women would have obvious reasons to be less satisfied with their life and their professional situation than men: they perform longer hours of unpaid work, receive lower wages and are still predominantly clustered into less prestigious occupations. Authors propose two main explanations for this contrasted picture. The first one is that men and women make different use of their time, especially when they live together. The second one is that they have different expectations.'

- Description
- This report examines the gender pattern of differences and similarities in working conditions in Europe, drawing on the findings of the Foundation’s Third European Survey on Working Conditions 2000. It examines the reasons for the persistence of gender segregation and sets out policy recommendations for action. It also considers whether the established indicators of working conditions need to be revised to make them more ‘gender-sensitive’ to particular issues primarily associated with women’s jobs, women’s experiences in the workplace, or workload issues within households.

- Description
- This study analyses the socio-economic and health status of women workers in the informal sector in Chennai, India. Women homeworkers face many issues such as long hours of work, low wages, meagre rates per piece, lack of social security and lack of union or organizational support. More importantly, their conditions of work and health are deplorable. The findings reveal that female home-based workers are subject to multiple forms of exploitation such as low wages, delayed and irregular payments and sporadic work. In conclusion, the researcher states that despite these problems, home-based work is the most suitable avenue for poverty alleviation and employment generation among urban women. However, low wages, lack of micro-capital for entrepreneurial ventures and non-payment of dues on time are serious issues that these workers face.
