- This book explores the connexxions between the politics of feminism and the representational practices of contemporary popular culture, examining how feminism is ‘made sensible’ through visual imagery and popular culture representations. It investigates how popular culture is produced, represented and consumed to reproduce the conditions in which feminism is valued or dismissed, and asks whether antifeminism exists in commodity form and is commercially viable.

- Description
- Volume about media representations and practices that have emerged out of contemporary wars. The author considers two questions: how the construction of gender, race and class in media are productive of regimes of truth regarding war and military life, and how such constructions may intensify militarism. By examining news and documentary media produced since September 11, 2001, she demonstrates that news narratives that include women use feminism selectively in gender equality narratives. They tend to reinforce historically resonant gender, race and class identity constructions.

- This book examines the relationships between gender, media, and modernity in Asian contexts. Contributors analyse gender and fluctuations of power by concentrating on the reach of global media and its (re)working in local contexts. The book explores first, what is the role that global communications media play in constructing ideas about cultural identities in Asian contexts: second, how do media texts and the politics of consumption construct versions of a 'modern woman' in some Asian contexts: third, how do we define and interpret the feminine as understood in an Asian context.

- Practices of cosmetic surgery have grown exponentially in recent years in both over-developed and developing worlds. What comprises cosmetic surgery has also changed, with new procedures and an extraordinary rise of non-surgical operations. As the practices of cosmetic surgery have multiplied and diversified, so have feminist approaches to understanding them. In this volume leading feminist scholars including Susan Bordo, Kathy Davis, Vivian Sobchack and Kathryn Pauly Morgan, have been brought together to reveal the complexity of feminist engagements with the phenomenon that still remains popular among women.

- Originally a euphemism 'chick lit' mutated from a movement in American women's avant-garde fiction in the 1990s to become, by the turn of the century, a humorous subset of women's literature, journalism, and advice manuals. Harzewski examines such best sellers as Bridget Jones's Diary, The Devil Wears Prada, and Sex and the City as urban appropriations of and departures from the narrative traditions of the novel of manners, the popular romance, and the bildungsroman. Further, Harzewski uses chick lit as a lens through which to view gender relations in U.S. and British society in the 1990s. The book is a historicization of this major pop-cultural phenomenon, and Harzewski demonstrates how chick lit and the critical study of it yield social observations on upheavals in Anglo-American marriage and education patterns, heterosexual rituals, feminism, and postmodern values.

- Since World War II, the biological and technological have been fusing and merging in new ways, resulting in the loss of a clear distinction between the two. As this process permeates more of everyday life, the urgent necessity arises to rethink both biology and technology. The human body can no longer be regarded either as a bounded entity or as a naturally given and distinct part of an unquestioned whole. This book assumes a posthuman definition of the body. It is grounded in questions about today's biocultures, which pertain neither to humanist bodily integrity nor to the anthropological assumption that human bodies are the only ones that matter. In exploring current reconfigurations of bodies and embodied subjects, the contributors pursue a technophilic path while articulating new and thoroughly appraised ethical standards.

- In this publication, the author mines the archive of the term ‘women’s liberation’, how it has been represented and remembered. She refocuses debates about the movement’s history and influence. Rather than interpreting women's liberation in terms of success or failure, she approaches the movement as a range of rhetorical strategies that were used to persuade and enact a new political constituency and, ultimately, to bring a new world into being. Based on readings of memories, films, and media texts.

- From the days of the fur trade through the contemporary period, women have played important roles in the public life of Canada. Until the 1970s, however, these contributions were generally overlooked. This book looks at the progress made in the last forty years to raise the profile of women's involvement in public life. .The contributors focus on two questions with reference to community activism, the politics of feminist organizing, parties and elections, and the communications environment in which politicians operate. First, are the doors to participation presently open wider than they were in the past? What obstacles as well as possibilities face specific groups of female citizens? Have patterns of media coverage shifted such that women can expect to engage in community groups and party organizations on something approaching an even playing field? Second, how can these doors be opened wider, both in terms of real-world participation and our scholarly understanding of public engagement? What remedies have been proposed? What research directions need to be pursued?

- Girls’ comics were a major genre from the 1950s onwards in Britain. The most popular titles sold between 800,000 and a million copies a week. This genre was slowly replaced by magazines which now dominate publishing for girls. This book explores the genre, looking at how and why this rich history has been forgotten. The research is based around both analysis of what the titles contained and interviews with women about their childhood comic reading. In addition, it also looks at the other comic books that British girls engaged with, including humour comics and superhero titles. In doing so it looks at intersections of class, girlhood, and genre, and puts comic reading into historical, cultural, and educational context.

- Feminism has hit the big time. Once a dirty word brushed away with a grimace, “feminist” has been rebranded as a shiny label sported by movie and pop stars, fashion designers, and multi-hyphenate powerhouses like Beyoncé. It drives advertising and marketing campaigns for everything from wireless plans to underwear to perfume, presenting what’s long been a movement for social justice as just another consumer choice in a vast market. Individual self-actualization is the goal, shopping more often than not the means, and celebrities the mouthpieces. But what does it mean when social change becomes a brand identity? Feminism’s splashy arrival at the center of today’s media and pop-culture marketplace, after all, hasn’t offered solutions to the movement’s unfinished business

- This book analyzes the intersections of celebrity, self-branding, and 'mommy' culture. The cultural regime of 'new momism' insists that women be expert in both affective and economic labor, producing loving families, self-brands based on emotional connections with consumers, and lucrative saleable commodities. Successfully creating all three: a self-brand, a style of motherhood, and lucrative product sales, is represented as the only path to fulfilled adult womanhood and citizenship. The book interrogates the classed and racialized privilege inherent in those success stories and looks for ways that the versions of branded motherhood represented as failures might open a space for a more inclusive emergent feminism

- Description
- This research contains a FEMEN activists personal account. Including a retrospective diary, resulting from the activity of the author in FEMEN between 2012 and 2014, she suggests how FEMEN employs sextremism to create soldiers of feminism. Her research proposes that sextremism is an attitude, a way of life and technology of resistance. She explains how she reproduced sextremism through body image that made her assertive and empowered her in action. She also observes that the media appropriated the spectacle created by FEMEN Netherlands but often distorted it and bend the news to fit its own agenda. In addition, the media criticized FEMEN Netherlands for cross-passing national values and power symbols.

- This is a study of the global anti-rape movement in eight nations which organized marches: Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the UK and the US. It demonstrates the mainstream news' unprecedented support for SlutWalk, suggesting that we may be finally moving away from an era in which feminism is seen as passé. Despite this support, mainstream coverage was often shallow. The feminist blogosphere provided sophisticated and nuanced analyses of sexual assault and rape culture and was also a key site for critiquing patriarchal rape myths. This book examines representations of the movement in mainstream news and feminist blogs, and documents the experiences, routines and strategies of 22 organizers who were involved in the movement between 2011 and 2014.

- This book covers five portraits of Irish women who were important in their working field and famous for their achievements in both Ireland and abroad between 1960 and 2016. Though the women considered - Edna O'Brien (writer), Sinéad O'Connor (vocal artist), Bernadette McAliskey (politician), Nuala O'Faolain (writer) and Anne Enright (writer) - were not interested in becoming celebrities, they were highly visible in the media. Four of them come from the southern Irish catholic middle class. The author investigates the origins of the media images in the lives and ideas of the women and their ideas about gender in a period of conflict and transition in the culture of Ireland.

- Vavrus explores the process of representing political women in media, and argues that contemporary news accounts promote a postfeminist politics that encourages women's private, consumer lifestyles and middle-class aspirations, while it discourages public life and political activism. The author discusses the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings of 1991, the 1991-92 Year of the Woman in politics, the 1996 presidential campaign's use of soccer moms, and Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign for Senate in 2000. Vavrus assesses the logic that emerges in these narratives' recurrent themes about gender and explores their significance for women and for feminism, ultimately arguing that feminism has been supplanted by postfeminism in news accounts of political women.

- Description
- This paper presents a study of feminist representations of the situation in the former Yugoslavia. Feminist texts that were generated in response to the wars in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina,which appeared in both the feminist popular press and scholarly publications in English, are being looked at. By focusing on the ideological plane, seen in terms of narrative structures available for speaking and perceiving one's experience, the author seeks to examine the feminist representation of the conflict of Yugoslav nationalisms and within Yugoslav feminism itself.

- Description
- Author's purpose is to show that radical humanist and feminist theorising have much to offer each other. Central to this article's thesis is the oligarchic structure of international relations. The core position and borders of radical humanist theorising are examined, along with an assessment of some of the major theoretical divergences between radical humanist and feminist theorising. Areas for theoretical alliance are also located which indicate the necessity of an inter-disciplinary approach that takes into account Third World liberation and the Green movement. A review of world government literature is noted, along with a review of contemporary examples of mainstream international relations publications, which continue to avoid the feminist standpoint, or relegate feminism to a subsidiary position, and the faulty theoretical positions of Anthony Giddens and the pro-polyarchy perspective. The conclusion considers the benefits of cross-theoretical dialogue between feminist theory and radical humanist theory.

- From the bestselling Bridget Jones's Diary that started the trend to the television sensation Sex and the City that captured it on screen, 'chick lit' has become a major pop culture phenomenon. Banking on female audiences' identification with single, urban characters who struggle with the same life challenges, publishers have earned millions and even created separate imprints dedicated to the genre. Not surprisingly, some highbrow critics have dismissed chick lit as trashy fiction, but fans have argued that it is as empowering as it is entertaining. .The contributors in this volume explore the characteristics that cause readers to attach the moniker 'chick' to a particular book and what, if anything, distinguishes the category of chick lit from the works of Jane Austen on one end and Harlequin romance novels on the other. They critique the genre from a range of critical perspectives, considering its conflicted relationship with feminism and postfeminism, heterosexual romance, body image, and consumerism. The fourteen original essays gathered here also explore such trends and subgenres as 'Sistah Lit,' 'Mommy Lit,' and 'Chick Lit Jr.,' as well as regional variations.

- Žarkov analyzes representations of female and male bodies in the Croatian and Serbian press in the late 1980s and in the early 1990s, during the war. She argues that the Balkan war was not a war between ethnic groups, but that ethnicity was produced by the war itself. She argues that both the representational practices of the 'media war' and those of the 'ethnic war' depended on specific notions of femininity and masculinity, (hetero)sexuality and ethnicity.

- Description
- This collection brings feminist critique to bear on contemporary postfeminist mass media culture, analyzing phenomena ranging from action films featuring violent heroines to the “girling” of aging women in productions such as the movie Something’s Gotta Give and the British television series 10 Years Younger. This book broadly defines that feminism has accomplished its goals and is now a thing of the past. It presumes that women are unsatisfied with their legal and social equality and can find fulfillment only through practices of transformation and empowerment. Postfeminism is defined by class, age, and racial exclusions: it is youth-obsessed and white and middle-class by default. Anchored in consumption as a strategy and leisure as a site for the production of the self, postfeminist mass media assumes that the pleasures and lifestyles with which it is associated are somehow universally shared and, perhaps more significantly, universally accessible.
