In het begin van de zomer van 1976 protesteerden de werkneemsters, het merendeel uit Azie, tegen de arbeidsomstandigheden, racisme, slechte beloning en de wrede behandeling door het management. Door de anti-vakbeweging van de eigenaar kreeg de staking veel support van Britse vakbonden en werknemers van andere industrieeen.
