- Description
- This part memoir and part musical biography of the American singer and drummer Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) documents why the Carpenter's seemingly white-washed music about 'normal love' have significance to the author, people of colour, immigrants, LGBTIQ and others. Tongson interweaves the story of her namesake’s rise to fame in the 1960's and '70s with the trans-Pacific journey of herself and her musicians family between her native Philippines - where imitations of American pop styles flourished - and Carpenter's Southern California, and between notions of romance and queer desires.

- Description
- While much has been written over the years about male blues singers of the first half of the 20th century, little attention has been paid to blueswomen. These women used their songs to proclaim their pain or to speak up and protest unfair conditions and discrimination. Through their songs, they expressed a desire for freedom and equality in a time when women were almost universally subjugated. The 37 women profiled here are representative of the many blueswomen who performed in the United States through the end of World War II. Some are well known (e.g., Lucille Bogan and Sippie Wallace), but many are obscure (such as Lil Johnson, Liza Brown and Margaret Whitmire). Biographical profiles are followed by a sampling of the performers’ lyrics.

- Description
- Babylon Girls is a cultural history of the African American women who performed in variety shows between 1890 and 1945. Through a consideration of the gestures, costuming, vocal techniques, and stagecraft developed by African American singers and dancers, Brown explains how these women shaped the movement and style of an emerging urban popular culture. They pioneered dance movements and the Charleston--black dances by which the 'New Woman' defined herself. These early-twentieth-century performers brought these dances with them as they toured across the United States and around the world, becoming cosmopolitan subjects more widely traveled than many of their audiences.

- Description
- Patti Smith (1946-) and Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) found each other on the streets of New York City in the late '60s and made a pact to keep each other afloat until they found their voices--or the world was ready to hear them. Lovers first and then friends as Mapplethorpe discovered he was gay. Mapplethorpe was quicker to find his metier, with a Polaroid and then a Hasselblad, but Smith was the first to fame, transformed from a poet into a rock star. Mapplethorpe soon became famous too before his death from AIDS in 1989. Smith's memoir of their friendship, Just Kids, is open-eyed with the oracular style familiar from her anthems like 'Because the Night,' 'Gloria,' and 'Dancing Barefoot' balanced by her powers of observation and memory for everyday details .

- Description
- In this book Feldstein examines black women performers, illuminating the risks they took, their roles at home and abroad, and the ways that they raised the issue of gender amid their demands for black liberation. Feldstein focuses on six women who made names for themselves in the music, film, and television industries: Ninam Simone, Lena Horne, Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln, Diahann Carroll, and Cicely Tyson. These women did not simply mirror black activism: their performances helped constitute the era's political history. Makeba connected America's struggle for civil rights to the fight against apartheid in South Africa, while Simone sparked controversy with her incendiary lyrics.
