- Description
- Schnitzler's Reigen, Wedekind's Die Büchse der Pandora: Eine Monstretragoedie, and Thoma's Moral and Magdalena reflect the gender inequity and interaction of their time as described in contemporary non-literary texts. The works represent a creative participation in gender discourse, taking the side of social reformers who argued for a more equitable treatment of women, including prostitutes. The discrimination endured by prostitutes, however, is simply an extreme of what all women experienced. The dramas expose male oppression of females, while simultaneously portraying what women can do in order to achieve limited independence and self-determination. Women are victims rather than victimizers, and male hypocritical attitudes cause women's suffering.

- Description
- In this book, the author explores the Western portrayal of Japanese women, and geishas in particular, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. She argues that in the West, Japanese women have come to embody certain ideas about feminine sexuality, and she analyzes how these ideas have been expressed in diverse art forms, ranging from fiction and opera to the visual arts and music videos. Among the many works Kawaguchi discusses are the art criticism of Baudelaire and Huysmans, the opera Madama Butterfly, the sculptures of Rodin, the Broadway play Teahouse of the August Moon, and the international best seller Memoirs of a Geisha. Butterfly’s Sisters also examines the impact on early twentieth-century theatre, drama, and dance theory of the performance styles of the actresses Madame Hanako and Sadayakko, both formerly geishas.

- Description
- The origins of the art of exotic dancing lie in English drama and Viennese opera: Oscar Wilde’s 1893 play Salome, and Richard Strauss’s 1905 opera based on it, brought onto the stage a female character who captured and dominated the audience with the raw power of her naked body. Her Dance of the Seven Veils shocked and fascinated, and Salome became a pop icon on both sides of the Atlantic. Toni Bentley explores how four influential women ( Maud Allen, Mata Hari, Ida Rubenstein and Colette ) embraced the persona of the femme fatale.

- This collection of essays describes the use of cross-gendered voices by authors from the 1850s to the present. The essays show that writing in the voice of the other gender is a long-standing literary phenomenon. The book provides historical and literary information and concentrates on the subjectivity of cross-gendered voices in modernist and late modernist work.

- Description
- This book explores the dynamics of cross-dressing and gender performance in contemporary francophone Caribbean cultures through a range of visual and textual media. Original in its comparative focus on the islands of Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe and their diasporic communities in France, this study reveals how opaque strategies of crossing, mimicry and masquerade have enabled resistance to the racialised, gendered and patriarchal classifications of bodies that characterized Enlightenment thought during the French transatlantic slave trade.

- Description
- With this study Claudia Thorun has made a contribution in an innovative area of research. Her interdisciplinary approach offers insights and directions for theatre studies, for culturally oriented gender studies, and for the historiography of the theatre. Sarah Bernhardt - praised as the ‘queen of the theatre’, feared as the ‘sacred monster’, decried as a ‘publicity seeker’ - was an actress celebrated throughout the world and one of the first international stars. In the late 19th century the French actress embodied contemporary images of femininity such as the New Woman, the virtuous courtesan and the man-eating femme fatale. Sarah Bernhardt’s image as a star and the discourse about her as a star formed the basis for discussion of important social developments of the fin de siècle, in particular the cracks and changes in perceptions of gender.

- Description
- In this book, Brooks argues that from the mid-nineteenth century tot the early twentieth, black transatlantic activists, actors, singers, and other entertainers frequently transformed the alienating conditions of social and political marginalization into modes of self-actualization through performance. Brooks considers the work of African American, Anglo, and racially ambiguous performers in a range of popular entertainment, including racial melodrama, spectacular theatre, moving panorama exhibitions, Pan-Africanist musicals, Victorian magic show, religious and secular song, spiritualism, and dance. She describes how these entertainers experimented with different ways of presenting their bodies in public, through dress, movement, and theatrical technologies, to defamiliarize the spectacle of 'blackness' in the transatlantic imaginary.

- Description
- From seduced maidens to adulterous wives, bigamists, courtesans, kept women and streetwalkers, the so-called 'fallen woman' was a ubiquitous and enduring figure on the Victorian and Edwardian stage. This book traces the theatrical representation of illicit female sexuality from early nineteenth-century melodramas, through sensation dramas, Ibsenite sex-problem plays and suffrage dramas, to early social realism and the well-made plays of Pinero, Jones, Maugham, and Coward. Women's illicit desires became a theatrical focus for anxieties and debates surrounding gender roles, women's rights, sexual morality, class conflict, economics, eugenics, and female employment. The theatre played a central role in both establishing and challenging sexual norms.

- This special issue is dedicated to the theme of Women Writers and Intellectuals. Virtually no women are part of the literary/intellectual canon from Russia to Greece, and when women do appear as writers, they are generally cast as an exception, or as marginal or incidental. Their presence, in other words, only serves to reinforce, explicitly and implicitly, the masculine ideal that defines the Central, Eastern and Southeastern European intelligentsia. Yet women wrote, both in private and public. The articles written by contributors to this issue fall into two categories: those that consider the invisibility of women at the heart of the literary canon and those that reshape the images of the intelligentsia in the modern history of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. With forum: Contemporary women writers and intellectuals.
