- Description
- Current worldwide statistics show that in the case of COVID-19 more men than women dy of acute infection, while women suffer more than men from the long-term health, economic and social consequences of the pandemic. This report argues that innovative solutions beyond health, such as economic re-entry strategies and product development, also need to consider sex and gender. The report studies sex differences in immune responses as well as sex-specific side effects of vaccines and treatments. Next, it considers gender-specific risk factors, the design of gender-sensitive prevention campaigns and the gender-specific socioeconomic burden of social/physical distancing measures and quarantines. Finally, it provides suggestions for future COVID-19 national and EU funded research.

- Description
- This UN policy brief focuses on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender equality and women's rights. It looks at four thematic areas: economy, health, unpaid care work and gender-based violence. .The economic impacts of the pandemic are especially felt by women and girls who are earning and saving less, having insecure jobs or living near to poverty. The health of women is impacted by the reallocation of resources and priorities, including sexual and reproductive health services. The report states that unpaid care work, mainly performed by women, has increased with children staying at home and older persons who need more help. Besides, as a consequence of the 'lockdown' many women experience domestic violence. Suggestions for national policies imply including women and women’s organizations in all COVID-19 decision making processes, realizing an inclusive care economy and designing socio-economic plans with focus on women and girls.

- Description
- Analysis of the demographic situation of the European Union (EU-28). Statistics show that the EU population is stagnating and it is expected to decline in the longer term. While the EU population is ageing as life expectancy increases, fertility rates are lower than in the past. This has serious implications for the economy, healthcare and pensions. Free movement within the EU and migration from third countries also play an important role in shaping demography in individual member states and regions. .The 'in-focus' section of the 2020 edition looks at the relationship between food and nutrition and demographic changes. It shows that, however food quality and healthier eating habits lead to higher life expectancy, the EU has to deal with and prevent the causes of diet-related chronic conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
