- Description
- This report continues to draw from the cases of Moldova, the Philippines and Mexico, and uses primary and secondary research to provide a detailed account of the lived realities of women migrant workers. The report focuses on specific sectors with high concentrations of women migrant workers, as well as the global issue of trafficking, to illuminate the gender-specific vulnerabilities and risks faced by women throughout their migration trajectory, and highlights the agency of women workers as they navigate challenges to claiming labour and human rights across borders. This report is the second of three designed to build on the growing body of scholarship pertaining to gender and migration, and is a resource for the creation of gender-sensitive policies and practices aimed at empowering women migrant workers. Research paper.

- Description
- In this publication, the author exposes racialized rhetorics of violence in politics and charts the development of gender as a category in U.S. asylum law. Starting with the late 1980s, when gender-based requests first emerged in case law, she analyzes gender and sexuality-related cases against the backdrop of national and transnational politics. She reviews the claims, evidence, testimony, and message strategies that unfolded in these legal arguments and decisions, and illuminates how legal decisions turned gender into a political construct vulnerable to U.S. national and global interests.

- Description

- Description
- Authors investigate the association between female leadership, work organization practices and perceived gender discrimination within firms. Using data for 30 European countries for the period 1995-2010, authors find that having a female “boss” is associated with lower overall gender discrimination at work. The female boss effect, however, differs across gender: it is associated with lower discrimination among female employees, but higher .among male employees. Authors also investigate the underlying mechanisms that shape gender discrimination within firms. Authors find evidence of a “women helping women” pattern through spill-over effects which reduce discrimination among women, but increase discrimination among men, particularly in female-dominated jobs. A better balance between work and life, a supportive work environment and flexible working time, particularly for women in high-skilled jobs, are shown to be effective in reducing gender discrimination. The above findings are .robust to a number of specification changes and different sub-populations in our sample. .Further, similar results are found when more traditional measures of gender imbalance, such as wages or career prospects, are used. Finally, to account for potential endogeneity and selection, arising from the non-random distribution of females in higher-rank jobs, authors jointly estimate the selection process and the discrimination equation, finding support for a causalinterpretation of the results

- Description

- Description
- 'This study builds on feminist scholarship that has critiqued this claim, and that has argued for a reconsideration of the relationship between sex/gender and the brain through the lens of neuroplasticity. In this dissertation, author argues that plasticity can indeed be used to develop a critical, material-semiotic account of how sex/gender comes to matter in the brain. However, noting the neoliberal, post-feminist tendencies of popular plasticity discourses, which compel individuals to engage in intensive self-surveillance and self-management through narratives of empowerment and choice, author also asks what kinds of norms, values and subjectivities a plasticity-based approach might unintentionally foster. By mapping the ontological, epistemological, and ethical considerations that this question provokes, The Politics of Plasticity examines the stakes that are involved in (re)thinking the sexed/gendered subject as a neuroplastic subject.'

- Description
- In this research the authors challenge the prevailing view about bias against females in American political campaigns and find that women actually do as well as men when they run as House candidates. They argue that the declining novelty of women in politics, coupled with the polarization of the Republican and Democratic parties, has left little space for the sex of a candidate to influence modern campaigns. The analyses of the 2010 end 2014 congressional elections reveal that male and female candidates communicatie similar messages on the campaign trail, receive similar coverage in the local press, and garner similar evaluations from voters in their justice. The authors demonstrate the gap between perception and reality of gender and electoral politics, and show the origins and implications of perceptions of gender bias.
