- Description
- This book looks at the experiences of women across Europe from 1945 to the present day. Europe at the end of World War II was a sorry testimony to the human condition: awash in corpses, the infrastructure devastated, food and fuel in such short supply. The vast majority of citizens on whom survival depended, in the postwar years, were women. This book charts the involvement of women in postwar reconstruction through the Cold War and post Cold-War years with chapters on the economic, social, and political dynamism that characterized Europe from the 1950s onwards. The case studies show difference and diversity across Europe whilst also setting the experience of women in a particular country within the broader historical issues and trends, in such topics as work, professionalization, sexuality, consumerism, migration, and activism. The introduction and conclusion provide an overview that integrates the chapters into the more general history of this important period.

- Description
- In Scandinavia, women's law was established as a distinct legal discipline in university teaching and legal scholarship in the mid 1970s. Scandinavian women's law has been mainstreamed into the general development of European law on gender equality and discrimination. Scandinavian women's law - as developed through the last 40 years - and EU gender equality law are thus contemporaries. Because of the direct effect and supremacy of EU law over national law, the interplay between elements of law stemming from the EU-level and from the national level has been particularly important in the Nordic EU-Member States - Denmark, Sweden and Finland (Norway is not a Member).

- Description
- In promising women equal citizenship rights and promoting gender equality, Turkey's recent welfare reforms appear to address fundamental problems-the patriarchal system limits women's lives to their roles as wives and mothers, and their labor to informal and unskilled sectors. Yet these policies, guided by the process of accession to the European Union, have conflicting outcomes for women. The reforms sweep away historic support structures and deem women 'equal citizens' without adequate interventions in legal and social frameworks, thus increasing their vulnerability. The AKP's neo-liberal policies and rising Islamic movements further weaken the reform process.
