- Description
- Comparative study of the novels written by five German-speaking women - Anna Gmeyner, Selma Kahn, Hilde Spiel, Martina Wied and Hermynia Zur Mühlen - who had to flee National Socialist Central Europe. The aim of this study is to reassess the women refugee writers' narrative strategies and integrate their work within feminist literary studies. The book situates the novels within the theoretical discussions surrounding exile studies, social history and women's writing. . .Contents: Exile Studies in Germany, Austria and Britain - Feminist readings of women refugee novels - Portrayal of Jewish characters - Representations of women - The possibilities of everyday life - Family sagas as multicultural utopias - Respacialisation of politics - Alternative narrative space.

- Description
- This book is about the struggles of women pilots to produce, define, and gain access to civilian airspace. It is also about how their struggles contributed to and were constrained by the division of airspace into five forms: the private, the commercial, the imperial, the national, and the body of the pilot herself, each of which contained particular relations of gender, class, race, sexuality, nationalism, and imperialism. Millward discusses different ways in which women pilots have been analyzed. She includes a comparison of gendered airspace in New Zealand and Britain, and the reception of the record breaking flight of New Zealand's pilot Jean Batten in 1936.

- Description
- This book researches the everyday gambling experiences of working class women participating in the National Lottery, and some other gambling activities. It gives new information on the various ways in which the women in the study managed, monitored and budgeted the money to be spent on the tickets. The book was set out to fill the gaps in existing gambling research by re-conceptualising the National Lottery as a social and cultural leisure product, thus adding to the small number of existing sociological and feminist accounts of gambling behaviour .

- Description
- The Victorian periodical press was a critical cultural site for the representation of competing gender ideologies. This book examines masculinities and femininities as defined and interrogated in these periodicals. It investigates readers , editors and journalists: and it considers the power of the press at home, in the domestic space, in metropolitan centres and at the margins of empire. The periodicals studied range from the 1830s to the fin the siècle. The study is informed by the theories and approaches of media and cultural studies and women's studies.

- Description
- Women have been structurally part of the masonic enterprise from at least the middle of the 18th century. This book is about the ways in which they themselves obtained and exercised power to influence the systems they were involved in, in order to adapt them to be more appropriate to their needs. The volume intends to concentrate on two aspects: Women’s agency (i.e. the power women gained and exercised in this context) and rituals (i.e. the role of men and women in changing and shaping the rituals women work with). These two aspects are closely related, since it requires some agency to realise changes in existing rituals.
