- Description
- When the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) came onto the scene in Europe in the early 1990s, one of the things motivating those mainly female activists was a desire to make people aware of the fact that almost universally it was women who were making our clothes under bad conditions, and that there were reasons for that it was no coincidence that women were stitching our garments or gluing our sneakers together, whether it was in the Philippines, Indonesia, India or China. Clean Clothes Campaigners wanted the public to know that exploited labour in these industries often had a female face, and if something was going to be done about their situation that fact couldn’t be ignored.

- Description
- This book directs the focus to a view of leadership as a multicultural phenomenon that moves beyond dualistic notions of 'masculine' and 'feminine' leadership, and focuses more specifically on leadership as the management of meaning, including the meanings of the notion of 'organizational leader.' The book's focus is on leadership 'traditions' revealed in the history of Black women in America and exemplified in the leadership approaches of 15 African American women executives who came of age during the civil rights and feminist movements of the 1960's and 1970's and climbed to the top of major U.S. organizations

- Description
- This study considers gender and entrepreneurship as symbolic forms, looking at their diverse patterns and social representation. Presenting an ethnographic study of the gender structuring of entrepreneurship, this work employs three strategies: (1) A critical survey of gender studies which argues that entrepreneurship is a cultural model of masculinity that obstructs the expression of other models: (2) 'Reflexive' ethnographic observation conducted in five small firms which describes how business cultures are 'gendered' and how gender is the product of a social practice: (3) An analysis of how discursive and narrative practices in business cultures constitute gender and entrepreneurship.

- Description
- According to a study by the ILO (2001), women's share of the labour force is increasing worldwide. Today, women's participation rate in the labour force is over 40 per cent of the global workforce. .Higher educational levels and falling fertility rates have contributed to this increased participation. There is also some evidence that women in some Asian countries may be less marginalised in their advancement into top managerial positions than their counterparts elsewhere. .As women become more educated and qualified for managerial positions, the number of Asian women managers and executives is predicted to rise over the next decade. This book examines the opportunities and barriers for women managers in Asia and presents an update on their progress in management.

- Description
- Inthis book Hughes examines whether an increasingly entrepreneurial economy offers women better opportunities for economic success, or instead increases their risk of poverty and economic insecurity. Drawing on original data from interviews, statistical research, and other sources, Hughes explores the reasons why women are starting businesses in record numbers. She looks at the type of work that entrepreneurial women are pursuing, the satisfaction they derive from their work, and the economic risks and rewards they face. Placing this study in the context of broader debates on economic restructuring, the emergence of a ‘risk society,’ and growing economic polarization, Hughes illustrates the diversity within women’s self-employment and small business ownership, and the need for policies to better address the particular needs of this sector of the workforce.

- Description
- Seed wars, or the control of foodgrains, are being fought through Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) which impose new property rights over seeds, thus taking them beyond the reach of farmers. Water monopolies, sought by multinationals like Coke and Pepsi deny people access to water, both by carving our private property within public water range, and by privatizing public services, increasing the cost of water by 200-300 percent. This book establishes the relationship between globalization as an economic war, and militarism and fundamentalisms as political and cultural wars in the project of global hegemony.

- Drawing on research into the collapse of rigid sex roles in the dawning 'post-gender' age, Warner notes that, in addition to their traditional penchant for shopping, women now have high-paying jobs and financial independence, and they're invading previously masculine preserves like home repairs and sweaty competitive sports. To reach the new woman, she contends, companies must stop thinking of them only as wives and mothers and do more than add a token female to their ads or offer existing products in pink. She illustrates with a number of case-study anecdotes about corporate marketing innovations, including Home Depot's female-friendly power-tools seminars: Kodak's marketing of easy-to-download digital cameras to technophobic women: clothing realtor Hot Topic's targeting of skimpy fashions to chubby teens: and DeBeers's bittersweet campaign to get women to buy their own diamonds instead of pining for a man to do it.

- Statistics show that businesses owned by women tend to remain smaller than those owned by men, whether measured by the number of employees or by the size of revenues. Because women-led firms fail to grow as robustly, the opportunities to innovate and expand are limited, as are the rewards. Based on recent studies that examine the links between entrepreneurial supply and demand issues, this volume provides insights into how women around the world are addressing the challenges of entrepreneurial growth. The first set of chapters consists of country overviews and provides discussions of the state of women growing businesses. The second set of chapters describes research projects under way in different countries and explores more focused topics under the umbrella of women business owners and business growth. The volume concludes with an agenda and projects for future research.
