- Description
- Bombshell spies, slayers, witches and assassins: kick-ass female stars have taken over blockbuster movies like Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill as well as prime time TV hits such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. These characters kill as quickly as they break down in tears, and beat guys up as easily as they toss them into bed. With very few exceptions, they're young, white, beautiful, straight and skinny. How are young women to respond to these images of women who fight (or bite) back? As the product of corporate media, are these icons of 'female power' merely cons? This anthology of new fiction, essays and comics recognizes the seductiveness as well as the limitations of such contemporary pop culture heroines. Contributors critique constructs of female power and invent alternative role models.

- Description
- Part I deals with the ‘East’/ ‘West’ divide in several spatial and political contexts and from different perspective and experiences: cultural, economic, access to resources, power relations, migration. Part II analyzes the gendered dimension of politics in Romania, Hungary, Poland, and Lithuania and shows the ways in which women’s positions and feminism are shaped by the post-socialist political, social and economic environment and by .the divisions and dissentions within the feminisms that developed in these countries during the ‘transition’ period and influenced by the ‘Western’ feminist discourses. The third part 'Gender Trouble’? Performing Lesbian Identities in .the ‘East' focuses on the ways in which ‘Western’ discourses of sexuality/ies shape and construct lesbian communities and identities in, chiefly, Albania, Russia and Romania. Part IV, 'Gender in the (New) Media: Queers, Dolls, Cyborgs, Monsters and Humans', concentrates on several media/popular culture discourses: advertising, television, video games. The articles analyze different ways and practices through which gender/ sexual identities are formed, reformed and fluidized by old and new media. The last part, 'Challenges of Approaching Gender: Political Theory, Multiculturalism and Epistemology,' deals with the relation between gender and political theories, difficulties of a gendered multiculturalism approach, and the challenges of feminist and/or humanist epistemology.

- The essays in this book challenge the knowledge about the fairy-tale heroine and offer new insights into the tales produced by female writers and storytellers. Exploring new texts and contexts, Fairy Tales and Feminism reaches out beyond the national and cultural boundaries that have limited our understanding of the fairy tale. Also considered within this volume is how film, television, advertising, and the Internet test the fairy tale's boundaries and its traditional authority in defining gender. .From the Middle Ages to the postmodern age—from the French fabliau to Hollywood's Ever After and television's Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?—the essays assembled here cover a broad range of topics that map new territory for fairy-tale studies.

- Description
- Berns draws on social problems theory as advanced in the work of Joel Best to explore how politics and media processes shape popular understandings and policy responses to domestic violence. She supplements content analysis of domestic violence articles in three magazine genres with a review of author guidelines, an examination of television daytime talk and entertainment news, and interviews with magazine editors. Berns identifies three media frames on domestic violence in popular media: a victim empowerment frame, a women are equally or more violent antifeminist frame, and a social justice frame. Her central argument is that the dominant portrayal of domestic violence in popular media is of victims and of what they can or should do to end their toleration of abuse.

- Description
- How do contemporary American female comics perform onstage, and what does this performance reveal about power relations in our culture as well as the existence of a 'female' and, more specifically, 'feminist' genre of stand-up comedy? Gilbert explores these questions in order to illuminate the social, political, and cultural implications of power and gender in popular entertainment. Her research recognizes the problems that arise from assumptions made about the genres of 'female' and 'feminist' humor and she suggests that these are part of a larger genre she calls 'marginal humor.' The book provides a historical overview of female comic performance and offers a overview of comedic postures assumed by contemporary female comics, providing a useful way to categorize this often overlooked genre. This book develops the notion of 'performing marginality' not only as the way female comics perform their gender onstage, but as the means by which all of us construct, contest, and negotiate our gendered, racialized, and otherwise marked identities in everyday life.

- Description
- Dever analyses the politics of feminist theory by looking at its popular, activist, and academic modes, from the liberation movements of the 1970s to gender and queer studies. Using key moments in the history of modern feminism, consciousness-raising, best-selling books like Sexual Politics by Kate Millett, and media representations of women's struggle for equality, she outlines debates of psychoanalysis, sexuality, and activism, and argues that a fundamental scepticism toward abstraction has been vital to the development of the movement.
