- Description
- HIV prevalence remains relatively low among non-IVDU prostitutes in Europe. While intravenous drug use remains the most important risk factor for HIV, petroleum-based lubricants may be a risk factor for HIV among European female sex workers: over 80% of those interviewed always used condoms. Authors want to assess the prevalence of and risk factors associated with HIV infection in European female sex workers, particularly sexual risk factors.

- Description
- The male condom is the most effective barrier method available for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection. There is an urgent need to develop and evaluate other prevention methods, such as the female condom. This study estimated the additional protection against STDs offered to sex workers by giving them the option of using the female condom when clients refused to use a male condom.
