- Description
- 'A qualitative study of the influences of attitudes on work preferences and employment patterns of Dutch mothers. It shows that a woman’s employment behaviour is the result of a dynamic relationship between her personal work preferences and gender and work attitudes on the one hand, and her work experiences and cultural normative gender expectations on the other, rather than the outcome of a free choice. The study further reveals the prevalence of ‘a narrative of non-complaining’ among Dutch mothers regarding their spouses’ contribution to the home work.'

- Description
- 'Part I of the paper examines the interface and trade-offs between paid and unpaid work, including unpaid care work, while Part II identifies data gaps and proposes further research and analysis. Specifically, the paper focuses on women’s and men’s division of labour between paid work and unpaid care work and its effects on gender equality with respect to decent work outcomes, and one’s ability and power to make and act on choices: its interconnection with individual and family poverty: and on how economic and social policies and institutions influence women’s options by reducing or increasing the burden of unpaid care work. Unpaid care work shapes the ability, duration and types of paid work that can be undertaken. As it does not offer monetary remuneration, it reduces the exercise of “voice” over decision-making and impacts on one’s ability to accumulate savings and assets. Being regarded a woman’s “natural” work - performed in the “private” sphere of the family - unpaid care work hides away its economic dimensions and contributions: and being undervalued, it assigns paid social reproduction (care) workers to jobs that are presumed to be unskilled, with low pay, slender options for promotion and scant social protection. .Most importantly, unpaid care work entails a systemic transfer of hidden subsidies to the rest of the economy that go unrecognized, imposing a systematic time-tax on women throughout their life cycle. These hidden subsidies signal the existence of power relations between men and women. But also, they connect the “private” worlds of households and families with the “public” spheres of markets and the state in exploitative ways. It is important to shed light on these interconnections and draw attention to a pervasive form of inequality, in ways that motivate public dialogue and action on behalf of policy makers, in the hope that change is possible.'

- Description
- This study examines the consequences of labour migration for labour relations in the healthcare sector in terms of equal treatment of employees. The report analyses the share of migrant nurses in the Dutch healthcare service, the experiences of employers and works councils with the recruitment of migrant nurses, the experiences of migrant nurses with working in the Netherlands and the experiences of Dutch nurses with their migrant colleagues. The main research questions are: What are the effects of the recruitment of migrant nurses on the employment in the Dutch healthcare sector? What are the consequences of labour migration for labour relations in the healthcare sector with regard to worker participation and equal treatment of employees? To what extent can labour migration in the healthcare sector be compared to labour migration in other sectors, such as construction and the meat industry?

- Description
- 'Authors analyze differences in female part-time work rates across countries using European Social Survey .data for 2012 to study composition and selectivity effects by means of Oaxaca-decompositions. A novel .treatment of the selection term distinguishes the effect of country differences in employment rates from .the effect of pure selectivity. Authors find that demand-side factors are more important than supply-side factors in explaining differences in part-time work rates, that overall composition effects are small and that employment positively selects women into part-time work.'

- Description
- 'In this report authors give an overview of the most important laws protecting women’s rights as workers. .With this goal in mind, authors do not limit the scope of this report to those rights that apply exclusively to women, but include all those issues that are crucial to workers who are women. As in the frst Labour Rights for Women report, authors look firstly at the legal framework enabling women’s participation and representation in the workplace, the contracts under which they can be employed and the wages to which they are entitled. .Authors then study the legislation regarding non-discrimination, maternity arrangements and protection from sexual harassment. .The report focuses on the legislation that exists in the twelve countries (Egypt, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania,Uganda, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru) in the Labour Rights for Women Project. In order to retain its practical value, this report does not provide an exhaustive list of all relevant legislation and policy in the twelve countries, but an impression of the most important rights that women should be able to rely on.'

- Description
- 'To explore how an informal job in formal employment can be define and who has an informal job and what the labour market outcomes are, are the research objectives, this paper uses data of comparable face-to-face surveys in nine countries: Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo. An index for job-based informality is developed, based on contribution and entitlement to social security and employment status. In all countries, the young and low-educated workers are more likely to hold informal jobs: even more so are workers in micro-enterprises and private industry, and to a lesser extent those in unskilled occupations. Women and men are equally likely to hold informal jobs in formal employment. The more informal, the poorer the labour market outcomes: wages are lower: the chances of being paid below the minimum wage, working more than 48 hours, and not being covered by a collective agreement are higher.'

- Description
- 'In the first place, this paper provides a comparative legal analysis of the concept of equality. In the second place, attention is paid to the notion of positive action in EU law and, in particular, in the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU. This paper includes an analysis of the interpretative value of that case law to provide guidance for the adoption of positive action measures and the possible clashes with the international and national contexts. Finally, attention is paid to the recent actions adopted by the European Commission to promote gender balance in decision-making positions.'

- Description
- 'An examination of gender differences in perceived quality of employment (achievement, content, job insecurity, job flexibility, and physical and emotional conditions). The big question is whether women’s occupations provide better conditions in areas that facilitate their dual role in society, such as flexible working schedule, as a tradeoff for low monetary rewards. Specifically, how closely women’s concentration in broader occupational categories, embedded in particular national contexts, is associated with gender differences in job quality.'

- Description
- Lately preference theory has gained significance in the academic literature on the determinants of female employment patterns. Mostly, within these studies gender and work attitudes and work preferences are treated as one concept. However, in this working paper it is argued that relatively variable work preferences act as a mediating factor between more stable gender and work attitudes and actual labour market behaviour. This study demonstrates that the effect of gender and work attitudes on mothers’ labour market behaviour is largely mediated by the variable work preference, which influence on actual labour participation appears much larger than the influence of objective background characteristics. Next, the analysis supports the claim that more or less stable gender and work attitudes have a balancing effect on otherwise more flexible work preferences.
