- In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Farrow, son of actress Mia Farrow and filmmaker Woody Allen. to a story about Harvey Weinstein , protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family. This is the story of the tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement of metoo.

- Description
- This book is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds. Buss analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women's lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women's lives, what is now commonly called intersectionality. The book is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion.

- For more than a century before gay marriage became a political issue, same-sex unions flourished in America. Pairs of men and pairs of women joined together in committed unions, for periods of thirty or forty—sometimes as many as fifty—years. In short, they loved and supported each other every bit as much as any husband and wife. Streitmatter reveals how some of these unions didn’t merely improve the quality of life for the two people involved but also enriched the American culture. Among the high-profile couples whose lives and loves are illuminated in the following pages are Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams and Mary Rozet Smith, literary icon Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, writer Audre Lorde and Frances Clayton.

- Much has been written about the American women’s rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902). Historians have written her biography, detailed her campaign for woman’s suffrage, documented her partnership with Susan B. Anthony, and compiled all of her writings and papers. The author extends the discussion of Stanton’s impact on modern-day feminism by analyzing her intellectual contributions to — and personal experiences with — family law. Throughout her fifty-year career, Stanton emphasized reform of the private sphere of the family as central to achieving women’s equality.

She was also one of the first six women to join NASA’s storied astronaut corps.

She discusses how the group used their writings to explore and at times replicate the arrangement of their material possessions. - This is a reflection on the work, influence, and personality of Susan Sontag. Reactions to Sontag tend to be polarized, but Lopate's account of Sontag's significance to him and to the culture over which she loomed is neither hagiography nor hatchet job. Despite admiring and being inspired by her essays, he admits a persistent ambivalence about Sontag. Lopate also describes the figure she cut in person through a series of wry personal anecdotes of his encounters with her over the years. Setting out from middle-class California to invent herself as a European-style intellectual, Sontag raised the bar of critical discourse and offered up a model of a freethinking, imaginative, and sensual woman. But while crediting her successes, Lopate also looks at how her taste for aphorism and the radical high ground led her into exaggerations that could do violence to her own common sense, and how her ambition to be seen primarily as a novelist made her undervalue her brilliant essays.

- Sylvia Plath, who committed suicide in 1963 at age thirty, is now widely regarded as one of America's greatest poets. Her second collection, 'Ariel,' which was issued posthumously in 1965, received superb reviews and became one of the best-selling books of poetry published in the twentieth century. What is less well known about this celebrated volume is that the poems it contains are not the ones Plath herself selected when she assembled her manuscript. With great care and critical insight, Bundtzen examines Plath's original typescript for 'Ariel' and compares it to the version that was published by her estranged husband, Ted Hughes. In his role as Plath's literary executor and Ariel's editor, Hughes deleted twelve poems that he considered too 'personally aggressive' in their attacks on him, while adding several others composed in the final weeks of Plath's life and colored by her suicidal depression. Bundtzen argues that Plath's original plan represented a conscious response to her disintegrating marriage--the swearing off of an old life with Hughes and the creation of a new self as a woman and poet.

- Description
- In 1973 Georgia O'Keeffe employed C. S. Merrill to catalog her library for her estate. Merrill, a poet who was a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, was twenty-six years old and O'Keeffe was eighty-five, almost blind, but still painting. Over seven years, Merrill was called upon for secretarial assistance, cooking, and personal care for the artist. Merrill's journals reveal details of the daily life of a genius. The author describes how O'Keeffe stretched the canvas for her twenty-six-foot cloud painting and reports on O'Keeffe's favorite classical music and preferred performers. Merrill provided descriptions of nature when she and the artist went for walks: she read to O'Keeffe from her favorite books and helped keep her space in meticulous order.
