- Description
- Dealing with some of the major themes in film narratives, this book draws on the theories of French psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva. It looks at how narratives have changed over time, and considers the sources of our variable reactions of themes and representations of horror, strangers, and love. In addition to a selection of contemporary mainstream films, the major films for analysis are New Zealand 'New Wave' films such as Alison Maclean's Kitchen sink and crush', Vincent Ward's 'Vigil', and Jane Campion's 'Sweety, 'An angel at my table', and 'The piano'.'

- Description
- This title illustrates the relationship between film history and feminist theory. The book brings together feminist scholars to examine the intersections of feminism, history, and feminist theory in film. Subjects include archival work, visual culture, reception studies, biography, ethno-historical studies, historiography and textual analysis. Essays investigate the different models available in feminist film history and how those feminist strategies might serve as paradigmatic for other sites of feminist intervention. Chapters range chronologically from early cinema to post-feminist texts, organized around the key areas of reception, stars, and authorship. There is a final section that examines the very definitions of feminism (post-feminism), cinema (transmedia), and archives (virtual and online) in place today.

- The book explores the themes of 'radical concepts' in politics, politically relevant and applicable epistemologies, inspired by Laruelle and Badiou and the possibility of hybridization of the epistemic stance of 'radical concept' with the politics of grief and 'identification with the suffering itself' proposed by Judith Butler. The thesis of the book is that the instances of the 'lived,' the 'event' or the 'Real' can be inherently inter-connected by virtue of the category of the 'experience' which is an instance of the sheer lived, the bare being subjected to an occurrence which is always already an instance of trauma.

Reading novels and films including Mrs. Dalloway, The Well of Loneliness, Bend It Like Beckham and Children of Men, Ahmed considers the plight of the figures who challenge and are challenged by the attribution of happiness to particular objects or social ideals: the feminist killjoy, the unhappy queer, the angry black woman and the melancholic migrant.

- Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1624?–1674), was the first woman to publish her own natural philosophy. She challenged the new science and ridiculed the mission of the Royal Society. In this volume, the author combines close readings of Cavendish's writings with discussion on her thought in the broader context of scientific revolution. She explores the fantastic and gendered elements of Cavendish’s natural philosophy. Cavendish integrated imaginative speculation and physical science. She embraced an epistemology that favored contemplation and intuition over logic and empiricism.

The author asks why and how are cross-cultural links among these practices drawn by feminist theorists and commentators, and what do these analogies do? What knowledges, hierarchies and figurations do these comparisons produce in feminist theory, and how do such effects resonate within popular culture?

This volume treats a range of film texts, from Marguerite Duras to 21st century horror films, from Agnes Varda's installation at the Pantheon to contemporary Russian film, from Tarantino's latest work to Sofia Coppola’s trilogy, from the Western to Steven Spielberg, from Hitchcock, Fellini, and Fassbinder to the subgenre of the career-woman-in-peril thriller. This anthology investigates new areas of research for critical inquiry into film and gender studies as well as feminist, queer, postfeminist and masculinity theories. In conversation with a variety of theorists and filmmakers, these essays consider how to productively explore the intersections of film theory, feminist theory, psychoanalysis, and cultural studies.

- Description
- Feminist research is informed by a history of breaking silences, of demanding that women’s voices be heard, recorded and included in wider intellectual genealogies and histories. This has led to an emphasis on voice and speaking out in the research endeavour. Moments of secrecy and silence are less often addressed. This gives rise to a number of questions. What are the silences, secrets, omissions and and political consequences of such moments? What are their implications for research praxis? Contributors to this volume were invited to reflect on these questions. The resulting chapters are a collection of insights into the research process, making a contribution to theoretical and empirical debates about epistemology, subjectivity and identity in research.

The way in which Hesse has been constructed as a 'woman artist' is examined as well as the legacy of the Holocaust and refugee life in her art practice. The importance of the interpretation and the relationships between artworks and audiences are emphasized. The author also writes about her own encounters with Hesse’s art and its importance for her own artistic career.

- In this book the author steers black sexual politics toward a more sex-positive trajectory. Introducing feminist analysis to a conceptual ménage à trois of scripting theory, media representation, and black sexual politics, Lee considers the ways in which the feminist quest for social and sexual equality can delve into popular culture to see the production of subversive scripts for female sexuality and erotic agency. Whereas most feminist scholarship underscores how sexual representations of black women in media are exploitative and problematic, Lee portrays black female celebrities like Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Karrine Steffans, Zane, Tyra Banks, Juanita Bynum, Sheryl Underwood and many more as feminists of sorts who afford women access to cultural tools to renegotiate sexual identity and celebrate sexual agency and empowerment.

- Gender-transgressive sexual minorities
- HIV/AIDS among women of color and sexual minority women
- Psychological perspectives on older women, including transitions, cognitive functioning, and mental health

- In this book, the author sets out to demonstrate how feminist theorizing is relevant to issues that may seem less directly about the status and emancipation of women but that are vital, she argues, to forming connections with other important twenty-first century movements. The author shows how a feminist approach to crafting these connections can shed light on the economic disparity and entrenched gender inequality of global markets: the role technology plays in our conception of reproductive rights, sexual identity, and gender: the rise of religious fanaticism: and the relationship between our conceptions of gender, nonhuman animals, and the environment.

- Description
- Among the many tools feminist legal theorists have given scholars is that of anti-essentialism: women are not created equal, and privilege varies by circumstances, particularly that of race and class. At the same time, feminist legal theory tends to view men through an essentialist lens, in which men are created equal. The study of masculinities, inspired by feminist theory to explore the construction of masculinity, questions the real circumstances of men to explore how privilege is constructed. In this book Nancy Dowd looks at the anti-essentialist model to the study of masculinities. She demonstrates how men's treatment by the law and society in general varies by race, economic position, sexuality, and other factors. She applies these insights to both boys and men, examining how masculinities analysis exposes both privilege and subordination. She examines men's experienceof fatherhood and sexual abuse, and boys’ experience in education and juvenile justice.

- Feminism is one of the most important perspectives from which visual culture has been theorized and historicized over the past forty years. Challenging the notion of feminism as a unified discourse, this second edition of The Feminism and Visual Culture Reader assembles 73 articles that address art, film, architecture, popular culture, new media and other visual fields from a feminist perspective. Articles are grouped into thematic sections, each of which is introduced by the editor. Providing a framework within which to understand the shifts in feminist thinking in visual studies, as well as an overview of major feminist theories of the visual, this reader also explores how issues of race, class, nationality, and sexuality enter into debates about feminism in the field of the visual.

Irwin follows with a look at how the 'grammatological opening' becomes crucial for Derrida's work in the 1970s and beyond, incorporating one of his last readings of embodiment in Le Toucher (On Touching), from 2000, which is focused on the work of Jean-Luc Nancy. This book engages with the work of Artaud, Bataille, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Habermas and Cixous, whilst also examining Derrida's relationship with Plato and feminist theory.

- Description
- This book is an attempt to make sense of the relationship between feminist theory and capitalism. Addressing a number of philosophical problems that have engaged feminists over the last few decades ( universals and reason, nature and essentialism, identity and non-identity, sex and gender, power and patriarchy, local and global ) this book explains the paradoxes of feminist theory by demonstrating the on-going relevance of dialectics and the concepts of exploitation, ideology, and reification. Drawing on first, second, and third 'waves' of feminist theory, this combination of existentialism, phenomenology, and critical theory delivers a proactive feminism ready to respond to the challenges presented by our thoroughly modern times.

- Description
- Hekman believes we are witnessing an intellectual sea change. The main features of this change are found in dichotomies between language and reality, discourse and materiality. Hekman proposes that it is possible to find a more intimate connection between these pairs, one that does not privilege one over the other. By grounding her work in feminist thought and employing analytic philosophy, scientific theory, and linguistic theory, Hekman shows how language and reality can be understood as an indissoluble unit.
