- Description
- In the familiar tale of mass migration to France from 1880 onward, we know very little about the hundreds of thousands of women who formed a critical part of those migration waves. In this publication, the author argues that their relative absence in the historical record hints at a larger and more problematic oversight-the role of sex and gender in shaping the experiences of migrants to France before the Second World War. This history of social citizenship demonstrates how, through the routine application of social policies, state and social actors worked separately toward a shared goal: repopulating France with immigrant families. Based a.o. on census reports, municipal statistics, naturalization dossiers, court cases, police files, and social worker registers.

- Description
- The author describes differences and intersections in the development of gender and queer theories in The United States and France. The book is divided into four parts. In the first, the author examines two specifically 'American' features of gender theories since their earliest formulations: on the one hand, an emphasis on the theatricality of gender, on the other, the early adoption of a 'queer' perspective on gender issues. In the second part, the author reflects on a shift in the rhetoric concerning sexual minorities and politics that is .prevalent today. The third part deals with developments in the concept of 'sexual difference'. The last section addresses the relationship between Western feminism and capitalism by focusing on debates about prostitution.

- Description
- This study of maternal societies in post-revolutionary France focuses on the philanthropic work of the Society for Maternal Charity, the most prominent organization of its kind. Administered by middle-class and elite women and financed by powerful families and the government, the Society offered support to poor mothers, helping them to nurse and encouraging them not to abandon their children. Inthis book the author traces the Society's key role in shaping notions of maternity and in shifting the care of poor families from the hands of charitable volunteers with religious-tinged social visions to paid welfare workers with secular goals such as population growth and patriotism. .Adams looks at the origin and ideology of the Society and its branches, showing how elite women in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Rouen, Marseille, Dijon, and Limoges tried to influence the maternal behavior of women and families with lesser financial means and social status.

- Description
- Following its publication in 1949, The Second Sex quickly became one of the fundamental works of feminist thought. In it, Simone de Beauvoir (1908–86) offered up a statement that has informed nearly all feminist and gender scholarship that has followed, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” And it is the woman Beauvoir became who continues to fascinate, fostering a legend of coffee-drinking Parisian intellectuals debating existentialism in smoky cafes along the Left Bank. Her personal and intellectual companions were one and the same—and as a result, her intimate relationships with Jean-Paul Sartre and Nelson Algren provide a captivating context to the development of her ideas. In this book about both the life and words of Beauvoir, Ursula Tidd illuminates the many facets of the feminist icon’s complex personality, including her relentless autobiographical drive, which led her to envision her life as a continuously unfolding narrative, her active involvement in twentieth-century political struggles, and how Beauvoir the woman has over the decades become Beauvoir the myth.

- War Girls reveals the story of the British women who volunteered for service in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry during the first world war. Examining their experiences on the Western Front with the Belgian, British and French Armies, this book shows how the FANY worked as nurses and ambulance driver-mechanics, and how their work inspired stories of female heroism and solidarity. The author shares the stories of the FANY--a fascinating, quirky and audacious group of women--and illustrates the ways the Great War subverted existing gender arrangements.

Informed by journalist Mildred's unpublished journals and voices of those serving in the BEF, and French and German forces, along with historical military background, the author examines events from the perspective of a woman who lived through them all.Mildred also knew Gertrud Stein and Alice B.
