With case studies.

It follows feminist photography from its start outside the museum and academic spaces to its incorporation into the fine arts museum at the end of the 1970s. The author focuses on London and Leeds. Characteristic of this period were the massive unemployment and workers' strikes as well as the various forms of social and political activism such as civil right and anti-war protests. Feminists increasingly turned to photography as part of their activism.

- Description
- This book charts the history of the women's liberation movement in Scotland in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century. Based on documentary evidence and oral testimony from feminist activists, this book argues for the importance of looking at the movement from the grassroot perspective, as well as locating the struggle for women's liberation in the local context, shifting emphasis away from large cities like London. The book uncovers the reach of the movement and considers what case studies of women's liberation e.g. on abortion and violence against women can tell us about the ways in which the development of the movement has been portrayed. In the appendices: short biographies of oral history interviewees and the seven demands of the women's libration movement in Britain. Paperback. First published in hardback 2014.

- Description
- Book describes the emancipatory impact of seven British young female writers. The play A Taste of Honey by Shelagh Delaney in 1958 was the first in a succession of young women who wrote about their lives. They rebelled against sexism, inequality and prejudice and in doing so challenged the traditional concepts of womanhood in novels, films, television, essays and journalism. Their work reached a global audience, paved the way for social changes and laid the foundations of second-wave feminism. Besides Delaney, the author tells the story of Edna O'Brien, Lynne Reid-Banks, Charlotte Bingham, Nell Dunn, Virginia Ironside and Margaret Forster.
