- The author argues that diverse women’s engagement with public spaces gave rise to and shaped second-wave feminism. Focusing on women’s activism in Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis during the 1960s and 1970s, she describes how women across race and class created feminist activism by directly intervening in the urban landscape. Some examples: Women secured illicit meeting spaces: gained access to public athletic fields: fought to open bars to women: abolish gendered dress codes and prohibitions against lesbian congregation: created alternative spaces, such as coffeehouses: opened women-oriented bookstores, restaurants, cafes and clubs: established women’s shelters and health clinics.

- Description
- Rape has long been a part of war, and recent conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur demonstrate that it may be becoming an even more integral strategy of modern warfare. The incidence and consequences of rape in the Vietnam War ( 1961- 1975 ) have been largely overlooked. Using testimony, oral accounts, literature, and film, this book focuses on the rape and sexual abuse of Vietnamese women by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War, and argues that the erasure and elision of these practices of sexual violence in the U.S. popular imagination perpetuate the violent masculinity central to contemporary U.S. military culture. The recognition of this violence is important not just for an accurate historical record, but also to understand the Vietnam veteran’s trauma, which often stems from his aggression rather than his victimization.

- Description
- Patti Smith (1946-) and Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) found each other on the streets of New York City in the late '60s and made a pact to keep each other afloat until they found their voices--or the world was ready to hear them. Lovers first and then friends as Mapplethorpe discovered he was gay. Mapplethorpe was quicker to find his metier, with a Polaroid and then a Hasselblad, but Smith was the first to fame, transformed from a poet into a rock star. Mapplethorpe soon became famous too before his death from AIDS in 1989. Smith's memoir of their friendship, Just Kids, is open-eyed with the oracular style familiar from her anthems like 'Because the Night,' 'Gloria,' and 'Dancing Barefoot' balanced by her powers of observation and memory for everyday details .

- Description
- Growing up in New Mexico, the child of working-class Chicago parents, Judy Grahn hungered to connect with the larger world, to create a place for herself beyond the deprivations and repressions of small town, 1950s life. Refusing the imperative to silence that was her inheritance as a woman and as a lesbian, Grahn found her way to poetry and to activism. In the process, she emerged not only as one of the most influential figures of the gay women’s liberation movement, but as a poet whose vision has helped to give voice to long-unexplored dimensions of women’s political and spiritual existence. In telling her life story, Grahn reflects on the profound cultural shifts brought about by the women’s and gay rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. The “simple” revolution she recounts involved not just the formation of new institutions (the Women’s Press Collective, Oakland Feminist Women’s Health Center, A Woman’s Place Bookstore), but the creation of whole new ways of living, including collective feminist households that cut through the political and social isolation of women. .Throughout, Grahn describes her involvement with iconic scenes and figures from the history of these years.

- Description
- West Germany's terrorist period of the 1970s is still a fascinating subject. One of the most provocative aspects is the high proportion of women involved in terrorism, most notoriously Ulrike Meinhof. That media concentrate on Ulrike Meinhof's life and mobilize established paradigms of femininity in its representation of her (as -mother- and -hysterical woman-) suggests that the combination of women and violence is still threatening and that there is still mileage to be hadfrom feminizing the discourse. This study returns to the West German print media of the 1960s and 1970s and raises questions about the continuing preoccupation with this period. Looking at publications from the right-wing Bild to the liberal Der Spiegel-, it explores how violent women - not only terrorists but also others such as the convicted murderer and media femme fatale Vera Bruhne - were represented in text and image.

- Description
- The book illuminates the centrality of fiber to contemporary artistic practice. It describes the social dynamics, including the roles of race and gender, that determine how art has historically been defined and valued. The author explores the advance of fiber art from the 'low' world of craft to the 'high' world of art in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. This provides background for today’s craft counterculture, DIY aesthetics and the importance of crafts in third-wave feminism. This change is analysed in the broader context of the art world and the impact of women’s art movement. Works of Eva Hesse, Robert Morris, Claire Zeisler, Miriam Schapiro, Faith Ringgold, Judy Chicago and others are presented.

- Description
- In 1963, as Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique appeared and civil rights activists marched on Washington, a separate social movement emerged among American Catholics. Thousands of Catholic feminists—both lay women and women religious—marched, theologized, and prayed together, building sisterhood and confronting sexism in the Roman Catholic Church. In this history of American Catholic feminism, Henold explores the movement from the 1960s through the early 1980s, showing that although Catholic feminists had much in common with their sisters in the larger American feminist movement, Catholic feminism was distinct and had not been simply imported from outside. Catholic feminism grew from within the church, rooted in women's own experiences of Catholicism and religious practice. She identifies the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), an inspiring but overtly sexist event that enraged and exhilarated Catholic women in equal measure, as a catalyst of the movement within the church. Catholic feminists regularly explained their feminism in terms of their commitment to a gospel mandate for social justice, liberation, and radical equality. They considered feminism to be a Christian principle.

- The 1960s and 1970s produced provocative fashion trends that reflected the rising wave of gender politics and the sexual revolution. In an era when gender stereotypes were questioned and dismantled, and when the feminist and gay rights movements were gaining momentum and a voice, the fashion industry responded in kind. Designers from Paris to Hollywood imagined a future of equality and androgyny. The unisex movement affected all ages, with adult fashions trickling down to school-aged children and clothing for infants. Between 1965 and 1975, girls and women began wearing pants to school: boys enjoyed a brief 'peacock revolution', sporting bold colors and patterns: and legal battles were fought over hair style and length.

- Description
- Book describes the emancipatory impact of seven British young female writers. The play A Taste of Honey by Shelagh Delaney in 1958 was the first in a succession of young women who wrote about their lives. They rebelled against sexism, inequality and prejudice and in doing so challenged the traditional concepts of womanhood in novels, films, television, essays and journalism. Their work reached a global audience, paved the way for social changes and laid the foundations of second-wave feminism. Besides Delaney, the author tells the story of Edna O'Brien, Lynne Reid-Banks, Charlotte Bingham, Nell Dunn, Virginia Ironside and Margaret Forster.

- Description
- This book is the first attempt to present a comprehensive picture of LGBT culture in the two German states in the 1970s. Starting from the common view of the decade between the moderation of the German anti-sodomy law in 1968 (East) and 1969 (West) and the first documented case of AIDS (1982) as a ‘golden age’ for queer politics and culture, this edited collection traces the way this impression has been shaped by cultural production. Exploring the complex picture of gay, lesbian and – to a lesser extent – trans cultures from this time, the volume provides insights into both canonized and marginalized texts and films from and about the decade.

- Smukler examines the professional experiences and creative output of women filmmakers during the 1960s and 1970s, when the enduring culture of sexism and racism in the U.S. film industry was challenged. Throughout the 1970s feminist reform efforts resulted in a noticeable rise in the number of women directors, yet at the same time the institutionalized sexism of Hollywood continued to create obstacles to closing the gender gap. During this era there were an estimated sixteen women making independent and studio films: Penny Allen, Karen Arthur, Anne Bancroft, Joan Darling, Lee Grant, Barbara Loden, Elaine May, Barbara Peeters, Joan Rivers, Stephanie Rothman, Beverly Sebastian, Joan Micklin Silver, Joan Tewkesbury, Jane Wagner, Nancy Walker and Claudia Weill.
