- Description
- This book examines gender within the context of disaster risk management. It argues for gender mainstreaming as an effective strategy towards achieving disaster risk reduction and mitigating post-disaster gender disparity. Highlighting that gender inequalities pervade all aspects of life, it analyses the failure to implement inclusive and gender-sensitive approaches to relief and rehabilitation work. While examining positive strategies for change, the collection focuses on women s knowledge, capabilities, leadership and experience in community resource management. The authors emphasize that these strengths in women, which are required for building resilience to hazards and disasters, are frequently overlooked.

- Description
- The acceptance of female leadership in mosques is a significant change from much historical practice, signalling the mainstream acceptance of some form of female Islamic authority in many places. This book investigates the range of female religious leadership present in contemporary Muslim communities in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Netherlands and North America. Authors discuss its emergence, the limitations placed upon it, and its wider impact, as well as the physical and virtual spaces used by women to establish and consolidate their authority.

- Description

- Description
- Focusing on issues such as worker identity, marital and family relations, consumer culture, leisure, sexuality, reproduction, activism, and resistancethis book reveals that women experienced socialism in diverse and in some cases empowering ways. This book studies state policy, gender relations and women’s and men’s lives, illustrating that there is no simple, coherent narrative of life under state socialism, but rather multiple, competing, and often contradictory ones.

- Description
- What happened in women’s history after the vote was won? Was the suffragette spirit quashed by the advent of the First World War, and due to the achievement of women’s partial (1918) and then equal (1928) suffrage thereafter, by having to wait to be reclaimed by the Women’s Liberation Movement only in the late 1960s? This collection explores how individual feminists and the feminist movement as a whole responded to the achievement of the central goal of votes for women.

- Description
- This volume is a collection of contributions centered around three main themes. The first part, brings together first-hand accounts from women’s lives as they face the horrors of war, drawn mainly from original sources such as diaries, letters, memoirs and writings. The second explores the lives and thought of several women activists who challenged inequalities and sought to create new opportunities for women, contributing to the definition of a transnational culture of peace. The final section examines the work of a group of women who saw the outbreak of the First World War and the emergence of an international women’s movement for peace as an opportunity to act for their personal emancipation, and, in some cases, for a different idea of politics. The volume provides a selection of contributions from little-known European contexts such as Italy, Poland, and Austria. The presence and contribution of African-American women, which has been neglected in the history of women’s pacifism, is also explored. Particular attention is given to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and to the International Congress of Women, held in The Hague in 1915.
