- Description
- Women represent a slight majority of Quebec's population, yet they continue to occupy a minority of seats in its National Assembly and in Canada's House of Commons and Senate. To explain why this is the author examines Quebec women's political engagements from 1791 to the present. She traces the path that led to women obtaining the rights to vote and run for office and then draws on statistics and interviews with female politicians to paint an indepth portrait of women's underrepresentation and its main causes. Her account not only documents the democratic deficit in Canada's parliamentary systems, it also outlines strategies to improve women's access to legislative representation in Canada and elsewhere.

Feminist analysis and goals are emphasized. An integral concept is quadraplexation: a paradigm that highlights the effects of reproduction, production, sexuality, and socialization in women's lives. Each chapter ends with questions and ideas to think about. Rev. ed. of: Women and (in)justice (2002)

- Explores the history of white men’s sexual violence against black women in the United States. Underlines the significance of black women’s opposition to this violence as a part of the civil rights struggles. Special attention is paid to the activism of Rosa Parks. The author argues that that Parks’ radical politics, her role as an organizer against rape and the importance of this organizing in the emergence of the civil rights movement has been neglected in historical narratives.

It examines topics of central importance to our understanding of the literary field in France in the period, such as the close relationship between politics and literature: the historical, political, cultural and personal legacies of the First World War: the so-called ‘crisis of the novel’ and the attempt to create and develop new narrative forms: the phenomenon of Russian emigration to Paris in the wake of the Russian Revolution and Civil War: the possibilities for the creation of a French-Jewish identity and mode of writing: and the threat of fascism and the approach of the Second World War.

- This publication adresses questions like “What does the study of Plato’s dialogues tell us about the modern meaning of ‘sex’?” And “How can recent developments in the philosophy of sex and gender help us read these ancient texts anew?” Each chapter demonstrates how the modern reception of Plato’s works - in both mainstream and feminist philosophy and psychoanalytical theory - has presupposed a ‘natural-biological’ conception of what sex might mean. Critical readings of the theories of sex and sexuation in Freud and Lacan are included.

- The author argues against the prevalent belief that the women's movement grew out of frustrations over the male chauvinism experienced by women in the Black Freedom Movement and the New Left. Instead, she contends, it was the ideas, resources, and skills that women gained in these movements that were the new and necessary catalysts for forging the women’s movement in the 1960s. Special focus is on the movements in Florida. The study takes notice of the leadership of African American women in the movement.

- Presents the history of female combat soldiers in the Soviet army from the 1930’s to 1945 and makes feminist analysis of it. Argues that women who volunteered for the front in 1941 saw the fighting as an expression of a new Soviet womanhood rather than enactment of male roles. Notes that the figure of the female combatant in a mass army invites scholars to consider combat violence as a meaning-carrying social activity and the role it plays in the construction of modern identity.

Virtue and painful childbirth were so synonymous that in 1591 Scotland, Eufame Maclayne was burned at the stake for requesting pain relief while birthing twins. Only in the early 1900's did pain relief in childbirth become socially acceptable, reflecting a time when women discarded their corsets and danced without chaperones. Lithuanian immigrant Lane Bryant started the first line of maternity wear. 'Twilight Sleep,' became a fad in which upper class American women traveled to Germany to undergo birthing while knocked out by morphine and sedatives. Backlash begat the freebirthers movement, and later, Lamaze.

In this volume, the author combines close readings of Cavendish's writings with discussion on her thought in the broader context of scientific revolution. She explores the fantastic and gendered elements of Cavendish’s natural philosophy. Cavendish integrated imaginative speculation and physical science. She embraced an epistemology that favored contemplation and intuition over logic and empiricism.

This remarkably diverse lot included Abigail Adams, whose 'remember the ladies' became a twentieth-century feminist refrain: Jane Pierce, who prayed her husband would lose the election: Helen Taft, who insisted on living in the White House, although her husband would have preferred a judgeship: Eleanor Roosevelt, who epitomized the politically involved First Lady: and Pat Nixon, who perfected what some have called 'the robot image.' - Description
- Analysis of representations of women as linked to death, produced by women writers and artists. Religious rituals, literature, film and war journalism are analysed. A central question is whether female writers and artists have rejected the dominant discourses of sexual fascination around women and death and produced different representations. Attention is paid to the cultural change in the 18th century, whereby death became more pronouncedly gendered than in the early modern period. This was in keeping with the new emphasis on sexual dichotomy in medicine, anthropology and philosophy.

- Description
- Images of black women, contemporary and historical, are examined and discussed. The focus is on the United States, but historical analysis extends to ancient Greek, Sumerian and West African cultures. The author also draws from her own experiences. - Description
- Studying a variety of literary forms – autobiographical writings, diaries, mothers’ advice books, poetry and drama – this book approaches early modern women’s strategies of identity formation. The author argues for an interpretation of these texts as attempts to establish a coherent, stable and convincing subjectivity, in spite of the constraints the authors encountered as women. Drawing on social and cultural history, feminist theory, psychoanalysis and the study of discourses, she makes close reading of the women’s texts and other sources. She questions interpretations of early modern women’s writing as voices from the margin or as a counter-discourse to patriarchy.

- Description
- This publication focuses on mothers as subjects and as writers who produce auto/biography, fiction, and poetry about maternity. International contributors examine the mother without child, with child, and in her multiple identities as grandmother, mother, and daughter. . .The collection examines how authors use textual spaces to accept, negotiate, resist, or challenge traditional conceptions of mothering and maternal roles, and how these texts offer alternative practices and visions for mothers. Further, it illuminates how textual representations both reflect and help to define or (re)shape the realities of women and families by examining how mothering and being a mother are political, personal, and creative narratives unfolding within both the pages of a book and the spaces of a life. motherhood in twentieth and twenty-first-century womens literature

- Description
- This collection is a scholarly study of the pervasiveness and significance of Roxolana (c. 1500–1558) in the European imagination. Roxolana, or ‘Hurrem Sultan’, was a sixteenth-century Ukrainian woman who made a career from harem slave and concubine to legal wife and advisor of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566). These essays represent an interdisciplinary survey of her legacy. The contributors investigate her image in a variety of sources, ranging from early modern historical chronicles, dramas and travel writings, to twentieth-century historical novels and plays. Also included are six European source texts featuring Roxolana, here translated into modern English. This collection examines Roxolana from both Western and Eastern European perspectives: source material is taken from England, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Poland, and Ukraine.

- Description
- The author explores the verbal and visual techniques of five cartoonists - Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Phoebe Gloeckner, Phoebe Gloeckner, Marjane Satrapi, and Alison Bechdel -, which have transformed autobiographical narrative and contemporary comics. Through the interplay of words and images, and the counterpoint of presence and absence, they express stories while engaging with the workings of memory. Aline Kominsky-Crumb is a pioneer of the autobiographical form, showing women's everyday lives, especially through the lens of the body. Phoebe Gloeckner places teenage sexuality at the center of her work, while Lynda Barry uses collage and the empty spaces between frames to capture the process of memory. Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis experiments with visual witness to frame her personal and historical narrative, and Alison Bechdel's Fun Home meticulously incorporates family documents by hand to re-present the author's past.
