- Description
- The author examines the theories and conceptual categories that Enlightenment Chinese intellectuals have developed to describe the collectivity of women. Exploring how generations of these theorists have engaged with international debates over eugenics, gender, sexuality and the psyche, she argues that as an Enlightenment project, feminist debate in China is at once Chinese and international. She describes the range and scope of Chinese feminist theory’s preoccupation with the problem of gender inequality.

- Description
- This collection of essays, written by musicologists and ethnomusicologists, provide a cross-cultural and cross-historical view of the roles women have played as creators and performers and the representation of women in world, popular, and western art music. Organized in five sections, the readings deal with a broad spectrum of topics and approaches about women, gender, and sexuality in music across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas from the twelfth century to the present. Included are themes as class and sexual politics in domestic and professional music making, the sequestration of female musical performance, the lament, gender identity through performance, and women singers as empowered voices of the people.

- Description
- This volume focuses on the problematic engendering of classical and contemporary sociological theory, addressing questions such as: How were the foundations of sociological theory shaped by masculinity? Did classical sociology simply reflect or actively construct theories of sexual difference? How did they deal with alternative accounts of the social in sociology's founding moments? This volume argues that feminist interventions in sociology are still seen as marginal to sociological theorizing.

- Description
- The beguine movement emerged during the twelfth century and spread through western Europe. Almost all members were women, committing themselves to the vita apostolica. The beguine movement was perceived to be over by the second half of the twentieth century, but the romanticised image of beguines lives on. .The main goal of this survey is to offer a well-supported synthesis, in contrast to the proliferation of different doubtful hypotheses on many subjects relating to the beguines, such as the origins of the movement, the etymology of the word ‘beguine’, the social status of the candidate beguines, the beguine mystics and the so-called revolutionary feminism of the first generations.

- Description
- The contributors to this volume investigate whether or not Machiavelli was a misogynist and a proto-fascist or instead a proto-feminist and a democratic republican. Among these themes they explore the implications of dichotomies as 'Fortuna and virtù', the 'public and the private', 'nature and reason', 'ends and means', 'functionality and the common good', as well as the importance of the military to the socialization of citizens, particularly women, to civic life, and the social construction of gender. Some of the contributors consider the possibility that Machiavelli's approach to ethics provides a special insight that feminists, and women generally, might explore to their benefit.
