- Description
- This sourcebook provides an overview of witchcraft laws and trials in Russia and Ukraine from medieval times to the late nineteenth century. It weaves scholarly commentary with primary source materials translated from Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. These sources include the earliest references to witchcraft and sorcery, secular and religious laws regarding witchcraft and possession, full trial transcripts, and magical spells. The documents present a panorama of daily life and reveal the extraordinary power of magical words. The editors present new analyses of the workings and evolution of legal systems, the interplay and tensions between church and state, and the prosaic concerns of the women and men involved in witchcraft proceedings. The extended documentary commentaries also explore the shifting boundaries and fraught political relations between Russia and Ukraine.

- Description
- The story of the movement for voting rights for American women, of every race, told through the voices of the women and men who lived it. With recognizable figures in the campaign for women's suffrage, like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, but also the black, Chinese, and American Indian women and men who were not only essential to the movement but expanded its directions and aims. Here, too, are the anti-suffragists who worried about where the country would head if the right to vote were universal. It carries the story to 1965, and the passage of the Voting and Civil Rights Acts, which finally secured suffrage for all American women. Includes writings by Ida B. Wells, Mabel Lee, Margaret Fuller, Sojourner Truth, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglass, presidents Grover Cleveland on the anti-suffrage side and Woodrow Wilson urging passage of the Nineteenth Amendment as a wartime measure, Jane Addams, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, among many others.

- Description
- This volume places female criminality within its everyday context. It reveals how their socio-economic and cultural contexts provided women with 'agency' against a range of European backdrops, despite a fundamentally patriarchal criminal justice system, and includes in-depth analysis of original sources to show how changing living standards, employment, schooling and welfare arrangements had a direct impact on the quality of life of working class women, their risk of becoming involved in crime, and the likelihood of being prosecuted for it.

- Description
- Female husbands - people assigned female who transed gender, lived as men, and married women - were true queer pioneers. From the colonial era to just before the First World War, Manion uncovers the personal stories of ordinary people who lived as men despite tremendous risk, danger, violence, and threat of punishment. This book weaves the story of their lives in relation to broader social, economic, and political developments in the United States and the United Kingdom, while also exploring how attitudes towards female husbands shifted in relation to transformations in gender politics and women's rights, ultimately leading to the demise of the category of 'female husband' in the early twentieth century.

- Description
- The author researched the history of the debutante ritual, a highly choreographed tribal rite. It begins in England six hundred years ago when wealthy fathers needed an efficient way to find appropriate husbands for their daughters. She traces the social seasons of young women on both sides of the Atlantic (London, Philadelphia, the American South, New York), often through their own words from diaries, letters, and interviews that Richardson conducted at contemporary balls. While exploring why the debutante tradition persists - and spread to Russia, China, and others nations - the author uncovered the cultural influence on the lives of daughters and ideas of women, courtship and marriage.
