- Description
- Author presents a comparative analysis of the performance of men-owned and women-owned businesses. Author uses a multidimensional framework of entrepreneurial success, where the indicators refer to the financial, nonfinancial and personal goals indicated in literature as being important to entrepreneurs. Economic performance was measured as change in sales and profitability for a period of one year and over three years. Data were obtained from printing firms based in Metro Manila, Philippines, a country in Southeast Asia. That no variations attributed to gender were found in firm performance on the short-term scale further support the findings that financial goals are actually considered by Filipino women to be vital to their success. Over the longer time period of three years, female underperformance became manifest perhaps because these women possess personal and nonfinancial priorities and their growth strategies may be different.

- Description
- Author investigates the interaction between the subjective and objective occupational conditions in affecting the overall health of women workers in industries that have accommodated information technology. The sample consisted of 23 establishments and 630 women respondents. Results show that the most prevalent issues among workers in the electronics industry included the need to upgrade skills, repetitive and fast paced work, pressure at work, and work that entailed both physically and mentally demanding tasks. It was found that the overall good physical health of the workers was affected by these factors: overtime, mental work, close monitoring, medium industries, poor quality of work, and hazardous work. Contrary to the belief that IT is light and stimulating, assembly line workers have reported rather issues in both objective and subjective occupational conditions affecting their health.

- Description
- The author analyses conflicts between advocacy and research on offenders and specifically male offenders. The analysis is based on the contradictory investments she had as a female researcher and an advocate during the final months of Kevin on death row until his execution. She describes how the interviews provided Kevin with a forum for enacting a powerful masculine self, a demonstration that eventually positioned the author as his victim. The assuredness of Kevin's execution allowed her to ignore his harassment and to continue data collection.

- Description
- The demand for intelligent professionals trained in science, mathematics, and technology by organizations in the business sector, as well as government and academia, continues. This paper examines factors that may influence women's initial choices to pursue careers in these fields. In addition to the many well-established factors that guide an individual's career choice, authors propose that women who choose careers in science and technology have a subset of common early experiences that encourage them to pursue a career path still regarded as contrary to traditional gender roles for women. For many women, this common background is a transforming experience that supports their career choice in science, mathematics, and technology. This transforming experience is composed of personal contact with a role model and often an intimate involvement with the process that serves as an invitation into the world of scientific inquiry. The researchers outline a model for women's career selection in these nontraditional fields, and authors' results suggest some recommendations for increasing the numbers of women in these careers.

The study was guided by the following objectives: (a) to ascertain factors surrounding female administrators' exit from administrative positions, (b) to determine female administrators' feelings upon exit and levels of support and treatment, and (c) to examine female administrators' perceptions and experiences of transitioning to faculty and the impacts of this on their lives. - Description
- Qualitative research and population based survey on 3,130 women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh to study the prevalence and consequences of domestic violence against women and their coping strategies. Sixty percent of women reported ever being physically or sexually abused during their lives. Their husbands were the most common perpetrator. Two-thirds of the abused women have never talked about their experience of violence and almost none accessed formal services for support. To address this major public health problem, the prevailing attitudes that permit and encourage male violence against women must be directly addressed.
