- Description
- Authors studied perceived discrimination among South Asian Muslim women living in the United States (US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). US participants reported greater perceptions of discrimination than UAE participants. In both countries, perceived discrimination mainly took the form of subtle nuances rather than direct harassment. Although participants reported the greatest intensity of perceived discrimination at work, hijabis (women who wear the Islamic headscarf) felt this more than non-hijabis. Conversely, non-hijabis felt greater intensity of discrimination in social spaces within Muslim contexts than hijabis. Despite feeling most comfortable socializing with either Muslims or South Asians, participants felt that, aside from strangers, their greatest sources of perceived discrimination also came from within their religious or cultural groups. Discussion of perceived discrimination touches upon the social aspects of being a South Asian Muslim in a Western secular context and a globalized Islamic one.

- Author presents a comparative analysis of the performance of men-owned and women-owned businesses. Author uses a multidimensional framework of entrepreneurial success, where the indicators refer to the financial, nonfinancial and personal goals indicated in literature as being important to entrepreneurs. Economic performance was measured as change in sales and profitability for a period of one year and over three years. Data were obtained from printing firms based in Metro Manila, Philippines, a country in Southeast Asia. That no variations attributed to gender were found in firm performance on the short-term scale further support the findings that financial goals are actually considered by Filipino women to be vital to their success. Over the longer time period of three years, female underperformance became manifest perhaps because these women possess personal and nonfinancial priorities and their growth strategies may be different.

- Description
- Three great bodies of thought have influenced western society's views and treatment of women: Judeo-Christian religious ideas, Greek philosophy and the Common Law legal code. All three traditions have, by and large, assumed patriarchy as natural: that is male domination stemming from the view of male superiority. As part of the culture perpetuated by these ideologies, violence towards women was seen as a natural expression of male dominance. This paper contains three main themes. The first establishes patriarchy as an early pattern of military societies and the subsequent emergence of the Judeo-Christian, Greek and legal cultural paradigm as ideological justification. The second provides evidence as to how the above attitudes were interwoven in European and American values. The third theme analyzes the new 18th century cultural paradigm of liberalism which rejected male dominance, lessened the manifestation of patriarchy, without removing its cultural memory, thereby, allowing violence towards women to remain.

The narrative focus of this paper is both on student's engagement with the learning process and on the author's own experience as a feminist teacher and researcher/biographer. The paper also contains archival material in the form of essays written by the student, and the voices, real and imagined, of several of the other participants in this study. As part of the research into the ways in which the student has taken up feminist knowledges in her journey towards becoming a trade union activist.

- The paper addresses the demographic and socioeconomic correlates of living arrangements of women aged 60 years and over in Lesotho using the 1996 Census of Lesotho data file. The results show that a majority of elderly women in the country are widows, live in the rural areas, have had little education, and dwell in extended family households of which a significant proportion of them are the head. The findings further indicate that the age of the women's surviving children, and advancing age of the elderly themselves are important factors contributing to kin coresidence of the Lesotho elderly female population. A combination of fertility decline, migration, and urbanization puts the older women in a disadvantaged position since there are fewer adult children available to provide support and care, and there is no universal non- familial social security system.

- Description
- Author, an assistant professor at the Department of women's studies at San Diego State University, wants to position women for the future through lessons learnt from the past by recounting the history of women in Afghanistan. The focus of this paper is on the importance of rural Afghanistan in the shaping of the nation and on women's status. Author traces the history of women in Aghanistan to show that women in Afghanistan were not always oppressed by fundamentalism as occurred under the Mujahideen and the Taliban. And she also shows that women's issues were part of national construction agendas like they were already in the 1920's. Author also tries to highlight the power of tribal and community leaders in defining the role of women and in resisting any modernization that would challenge their patriarchal authority. This paper also highlights the efforts made to empower women to create a sense of nationhood.

- Description
- Gender functions as a construct of evolving aspects of women's identities and is a medium through which expectations are prescribed, social norms are formed and power relations are negiotiated. Gender constructs that hinder women's access to the public spheres of society lessen the possibility for equitable and empowering life conditions. Facilitating women's entry into political bodies across the world is also compromised by persistent obstacles in women's opportunities in both political and private spheres of life. This paper engages female and male panchayat members in rural Gujarat, India. The main goal is to understand how being a woman affects access to political office, experiences therein, negotiation procedures and decision taken. Facilitating female representation in local governmental structures (a panchayat) through a quota represents one of many routes toward empowerment and one potential means of improving health and household welfare. When empowerment is examined within India's panchayat quota, dimensions such as gender and corresponding perceptions, norms and conditions evidence the middle of gender as a persistent fault-line in number-based initiatives. The panchayat mirrors gendered social realities, demonstrating how complex the processes of substantial democratic political participation and women's empowerment are, in India and elsewhere.

Dias also looks whether women's behaviour on these websites may be considered feminist without being overtly political or overtly feminist and sees this dilemma as a central tension in third wave feminism.

About half of them were involved in voluntary work or associations and groups that deal with 'women's and family issues'. Some of them have employed domestic workers from the Philippines and Sri Lanka to live in het house and either be responsible for housework, or look after their children and/or elderly. The feminist women in this study were further more tolerant of issues concerning homosexuality and sexual orientation and did not consider homosexuality as negative. This could not be said for the rest of the women. The author also pays attention to prostitution and the way women in Cyprus compare themselves with European, Russian and Asian women.

The sample consisted of 23 establishments and 630 women respondents. Results show that the most prevalent issues among workers in the electronics industry included the need to upgrade skills, repetitive and fast paced work, pressure at work, and work that entailed both physically and mentally demanding tasks. It was found that the overall good physical health of the workers was affected by these factors: overtime, mental work, close monitoring, medium industries, poor quality of work, and hazardous work. Contrary to the belief that IT is light and stimulating, assembly line workers have reported rather issues in both objective and subjective occupational conditions affecting their health.

- Description
- Authors want to contribute to the debate on whether countries with large Muslim populations, like for instance Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey, will embrace gender equality. The role of women in Islamic societies is still a highly charged political and cultural issue. Women’s issues are vital in the shaping of modern debates on democracy in predominantly Muslim countries. Examined were attitudes towards women’s equality by analyzing Muslims’ responses, looking at the effects of country, education, socio-economic status, age, income, religiosity and other variables. Some of the preliminary findings suggest that across the seven nations surveyed, broad majorities support gender equality but women are generally more likely to endorse equality than men.
