- HIV prevalence remains relatively low among non-IVDU prostitutes in Europe. While intravenous drug use remains the most important risk factor for HIV, petroleum-based lubricants may be a risk factor for HIV among European female sex workers: over 80% of those interviewed always used condoms. - Description
- Authors studied perceived discrimination among South Asian Muslim women living in the United States (US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). US participants reported greater perceptions of discrimination than UAE participants. In both countries, perceived discrimination mainly took the form of subtle nuances rather than direct harassment. Although participants reported the greatest intensity of perceived discrimination at work, hijabis (women who wear the Islamic headscarf) felt this more than non-hijabis. Conversely, non-hijabis felt greater intensity of discrimination in social spaces within Muslim contexts than hijabis. Despite feeling most comfortable socializing with either Muslims or South Asians, participants felt that, aside from strangers, their greatest sources of perceived discrimination also came from within their religious or cultural groups. Discussion of perceived discrimination touches upon the social aspects of being a South Asian Muslim in a Western secular context and a globalized Islamic one.

The Impostor Phenomenon (IP) asserts that many successful people feel like frauds that will be discovered in time. Twenty-nine women in leadership were interviewed in this qualitative study, and it was discovered that the majority of them do not have impostor feelings. Their confidence can be attributed to strong relationships with mentors, romantic partners, and other women in leadership.'

- Description
- Authors analyze paid and unpaid work-time inequalities among Bolivian urban adults using time use data from a 2001 household survey. They identified a gender-based division of labor characterized not so much by who does what type of work but by how much work of each type they do. There is a trade-off between paid and unpaid work, but this trade-off is only partial: women's entry into the labor market tends to result in a double shift of paid and unpaid work. Authors also find very high levels of within-group inequality in the distributions of paid and unpaid work-time for men and women, a sign that, beyond the sexual division of labor, subgroup differentiation is also important. Using decompositions of the inequality in the distribution of total time spent at work, they show that gender plays an important role in determining the proportion of paid to unpaid work done by individuals, but it plays a lesser role in determining the higher total workload of some individuals relative to others.

- 'Research focused on women in higher education is often conducted from a monolithic perspective of women. Few studies have investigated differences among and between women and the influences impacting such differences. Generational differences of individuals can influence values and preferences (Arsenault, 2004) as well as impact the organizational functioning of colleges and universities in the United States. Therefore, this mixed-method study explored these differences among female administrators in higher education. Quantitative analysis indicated generational differences in managerial practices among female leaders. However, more similarities than differences among the generational cohorts were discovered in the qualitative analysis. Implications for practice midlevel women administrators in student affairs are discussed.'

- Author presents a comparative analysis of the performance of men-owned and women-owned businesses. Author uses a multidimensional framework of entrepreneurial success, where the indicators refer to the financial, nonfinancial and personal goals indicated in literature as being important to entrepreneurs. Economic performance was measured as change in sales and profitability for a period of one year and over three years. Data were obtained from printing firms based in Metro Manila, Philippines, a country in Southeast Asia. That no variations attributed to gender were found in firm performance on the short-term scale further support the findings that financial goals are actually considered by Filipino women to be vital to their success. Over the longer time period of three years, female underperformance became manifest perhaps because these women possess personal and nonfinancial priorities and their growth strategies may be different.

- Description
- Three great bodies of thought have influenced western society's views and treatment of women: Judeo-Christian religious ideas, Greek philosophy and the Common Law legal code. All three traditions have, by and large, assumed patriarchy as natural: that is male domination stemming from the view of male superiority. As part of the culture perpetuated by these ideologies, violence towards women was seen as a natural expression of male dominance. This paper contains three main themes. The first establishes patriarchy as an early pattern of military societies and the subsequent emergence of the Judeo-Christian, Greek and legal cultural paradigm as ideological justification. The second provides evidence as to how the above attitudes were interwoven in European and American values. The third theme analyzes the new 18th century cultural paradigm of liberalism which rejected male dominance, lessened the manifestation of patriarchy, without removing its cultural memory, thereby, allowing violence towards women to remain.

- The paper addresses the demographic and socioeconomic correlates of living arrangements of women aged 60 years and over in Lesotho using the 1996 Census of Lesotho data file. The results show that a majority of elderly women in the country are widows, live in the rural areas, have had little education, and dwell in extended family households of which a significant proportion of them are the head. The findings further indicate that the age of the women's surviving children, and advancing age of the elderly themselves are important factors contributing to kin coresidence of the Lesotho elderly female population. A combination of fertility decline, migration, and urbanization puts the older women in a disadvantaged position since there are fewer adult children available to provide support and care, and there is no universal non- familial social security system.

Historically men laid claim to reason by disavowing the body: within this logic women, linked to their bodies, cannot write the poets valued by Victorian literary society. However, Barret Browning did write the kind of poetry restricted to masculine imagination, and in doing this threatened to rival male contemporaries. In as much, she disavowed the ideologically marked female body.

- Author decribes the experiences of Dutch women who have paid for sexual intimacy with a gigolo. Author wants to contribute to the acknowledgement of the diversity in the sex industry and to raise the question why the gender variable is not taken seriously in current prostitution paradigms. Sex workers have various reasons for entering the trade, they even do not experience the work in the same way. Not all sex workers are women and not all customers are men. Author hopes do shed some light on different needs, desires and demands of clients of sex workers, especially when the tabes are turned and women, not men, are on the demand side.

- Description
- 'It’s possible to assume that women who study STEM topics (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) with a low proportion of females have successfully overcome barriers in school and the family, making them less prone to stereotypic views, and in?uences. The present study focuses on these kinds of factors and analyzes to which degree family factors, school-related factors, and individual stereotypes may in?uence a woman’s academic self-concept. The following study presents a latent regression model which is based on a survey of 296 women from different German universities, all of whom are part of STEM programs of study that have <30% females. It was investigated to which degree individual stereotypes, support in school, and family support contribute to the self-concept in STEM. Gender stereotypes were negatively related to students’ STEM-speci?c self-concept in the selected sample. This study also reveals negative family-related in?uences that lower a woman’s self-concept. Positive predictors on the other hand included school aspects that are found in the students’ favorite subjects at school. The results of the study provide important aspects for STEM education. Even though the students participating in the study presumably had good grades in STEM, stereotypes still corrupted their self-concept.'

- Description
- Racial mixed couples are no longer an unusual phenomenon in Belgium and the Netherlands. Author examines to what extent the internalised racism based on black inferiority and white supremacy, as described in 1952 by Fanon in his Black Skin White Masks, is still reproduced in the intimate sphere today, despite increasing diversification in Western societies. Author analysed the narratives of Belgian and Dutch men and women, both white and black, who were at the time involved in intimate black-white relationships.

- 'Only a very small percentage of the perpetrators convicted by international criminal courts and tribunals are women. This raises the question as to whether women are less evil than men. Within the literature it is generally assumed that the genocide in Rwanda was unprecedented in relation to the role played by women, and that it is the first and only period of mass violence in which many women were involved. This explorative study however, shows that women have played a much larger role than we have generally assumed so far and that women can be just as evil as men – although it indeed seems true that generally far less women than men are involved in mass atrocities. There is a clear gender bias in the portrayal of female perpetrators as sadists, abnormal or lacking agency, but it can be questioned whether female perpetrators are less ordinary than male perpetrators.'
