- Description
- 'The ‘due diligence principle’, as it is commonly termed, holds States accountable for human rights abuses committed not only by the State or State actors, but also by non-State actors. Violence against women (VAW) is most often perpetrated by non-State actors — for example, a close male relative or an intimate partner. The due diligence principle is a critical tool in the formulation of accountability. By making the State accountable for violence perpetrated by non-State actors, public international law recognizes that VAW, regardless of who commits it, constitutes human rights violations. Due diligence has also ruptured the artificial ‘public/private sphere’ divide and the dichotomy between State and non-State actors, as States are now not only permitted but .obliged to enter the so-called ‘private sphere’ where most instances of VAW take place and where States have traditionally been barred.'

- Description
- This report gives a picture of where women stand today and how they have progressed in the world of work over the last 20 years, and of the root causes of inequalities and how they should be tackled based on what works and the guidance provided by international labour standards. It shows that, despite some encouraging advances, major gender gaps at work remain. Increasing gender parity in educational attainment does not prevent women from being concentrated in middle to lower-paid occupations that reflect traditional gender stereotypes and beliefs about women’s and men’s aspirations and capabilities.

- Description
- Sex discrimination persists in nationality and citizenship laws in over 50 countries around the world, continuing to trap women and their families in a web of sexist nationality laws. Too many governments have simply decided that women should have fewer rights than men to pass on their citizenships to their children or their foreign spouse, or to acquire, change or keep their nationalities.

- 'This toolkit has been designed to improve the way that parliaments around the world advance gender equality and to be models to the communities they represent. The toolkit should help parliaments wishing to evaluate how gendersensitive they are, assess their current practices and policies, identify possible areas for reform, plan for change, and establish mechanisms to monitor progress. .The toolkit draws on IPU’s extensive experience in supporting national parliaments on gender-sensitive reform work. It proposes sets of questions to be tailored to each national context. They are designed to lead to open, constructive discussions. The intention is not to rank parliaments. It is rather to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to determine priorities for strengthening the institution.'

- Description
- 'The Global Gender Gap Index presented in this Report seeks to measure one important aspect of gender equality—the relative gaps between women and men across four key areas: health, education, economy and politics. The Index was developed in part to address the need for a consistent and comprehensive measure for gender equality that can track a country’s progress over time. More than a decade of data has revealed that progress is still too slow for realizing the full potential of one half of humanity within our lifetimes. .The Index does not seek to set priorities for countries but rather to provide a comprehensive set of data and a clear method for tracking gaps on critical indicators so that countries may set priorities within their own economic, political and cultural contexts. The Index also points to potential role models by revealing those countries that—within their region or income group—are leaders in distributing resources more equitably between women and men, regardless of the overall level of available resources.'

- 'This report looks at how gender equality can be promoted and how to get power where it belongs – in the hands of every last girl. .It explores three key barriers that hold girls back: .• child marriage .• poor access to good-quality services – including health and education .• girls’ lack of a voice in private and public spheres. .These three barriers are violations of girls’ rights. They also pose formidable obstacles to progress in other areas of development. .In addition, it sheds light on levels of gender discrimination around the world, and highlights the countries where girls’ rights are most at risk. .It also identifies three specific guarantees will help governments reach the girls who are furthest behind – such as those who live in fragile and conflict-affected states, those who are on the move as refugees, those in the poorest countries and in disadvantaged regions, and those who face multiple forms of discrimination.'

- 'The Little Data Book on Gender 2016 is a quick reference for users interested in gender statistics and presents sex-disaggregated data for more than 200 countries in a straightforward, country-by-country reference on education, health, access to economic opportunities, and public life and decision making. Summary pages that cover regional and income group aggregates are also included. .The report examined the driving forces behind differences in key aspects of welfare between men and women—education and health, access to economic opportunities and productive resources, and the ability to make .effective choices and take action. Gender equality is increasingly recognized as not only a core development objective, but smart economics. Over the past decades, countries have seen significant progress to raise living .standards and close gaps between males and females, including visible improvements in health and education. At the same time, critical gaps persist in economic opportunity as well as agency of women and girls. Addressing .gender inequalities requires continued efforts to overcome a complex set of interrelated challenges linking gaps in human capital and technology, women’s disproportionate responsibility for unpaid work, legal discrimination, .and gender-based violence.'

- Description
- 'This study shows a troubling prevalence of gender-based violence against women national parliamentarians throughout the world. This includes not only psychological violence, deplorable wherever it occurs, but also other forms of violence – sexual, physical and economic. Even allowing for the complexity of the experiences recounted by the women surveyed, and the contexts in which they occurred, these findings suggest that such behaviour against women parliamentarians exists, to varying degrees, in every country, affecting a significant number of elected officials. Such violence impedes the ability of women parliamentarians to do their work freely and securely and has a dissuading effect on women’s political engagement in general.'

- 'By the close of this century, our planet will be home to some 11.2 billion people, which is a 50% increase compared to today. This growth will take place disproportionately: the population in developed countries, including the Netherlands, will be declining while in the least developed countries the population may even quadruple. Some of the most important drivers of rapid population growth are: high fertility rates, early pregnancy and higher life expectancy. .This paper aims to examine population dynamics, its consequences and drivers and specifically the link to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The paper is divided into four sections. Section 1 provides an overview of population dynamics and its consequences at macro level. The second section focuses on micro-level drivers, and specifically the link between population dynamics and SRHR. With a presentation of a historic overview of population programmes in Section 3, and end the paper with an exploration of future programmes.'

- 'Authors looks at how far the IMF has already fulfilled its commitment to deepen its policy advice on gender and bring this into its operational work, in particular in a sustainable way. Then they look at some of the implications of adopting this broader approach to macro-criticality for the work on gender. And finally, they examine what role conventional IMF policy advice plays in supporting the realisation of SDG 5. These questions will be asked in the context of the three core areas of IMF policy advice. .Having tested IMF research and policy advice in the context of its mandate and core functions against a survey of literature and research, the findings indicate that the macro-economic policy implications of gender equality and the realisation of SDG 5 will necessitate much deeper engagement by the Fund.'

- 'The Gender Review discusses global and regional trends in achieving parity in education access, participation and completion and in selected learning outcomes, stressing that there is much room for progress. It then shifts to an evidence-based discussion of relationships between education, gender and sustainable development by discussing work, civic and political engagement and leadership, as well as health and well-being. It concludes with ways forward: what action is implied by evidence and data for achieving more gender-equal societies and how progress towards such societies is to be measured.'
