Author, pastor and foster parent to a transgender young adult, begins her exploration of Thomas from the presumption of transgender as contemporary reality. Author's use of the term includes people who want to physically alter their bodies to conform to their gendered self-understanding, as well as those who simply defy cultural gender norms. Author suggests that while the concept of unitary gender is found in some Thomas sayings, other sayings offer alternative gender constructions. Author problematizes the suggestion that unitary gender should be understood as a third gender and argues that both gender and embodiment are variously treated in this gospel. With a german abstract.
