- Women account for nearly half of HIV infections worldwide and almost two-thirds of those among young people, with female infections rising in almost every region. Yet twenty-five years into the global AIDS epidemic, there is still no widely available technology that women can both initiate and control to protect themselves from HIV. Due to gender norms and inequalities, many women and girls lack the social and economic power to control key aspects of their lives, particularly sexual matters. As a result, women are in a difficult, and often impossible, situation when it comes to negotiating with their partners over abstinence, fidelity, or condom use.

- The vision for this special issue on 'Women's Bodies, Gender Analysis, and Feminist Politics at the Forum Social Mundial' emerged out of experiences that co-editors Pat Willis and Laura Roskos had during and after their involvement in organizing for the Boston Social Forum (BSF), an event held in July 2004. The decision to try to discover how other women/feminists had experienced and negotiated social fora around the globe was fueled by the need to create a deeper context for understanding these experiences and emotions. With the following articles: Feminism In the Space of the World Social Forum / by Ara Wilson : Ways of Being: Feminist Activism and Theorizing at the Global Feminist Dialogues in Porte Alegre, Brazil, 2005 / by Amanda Gouws : Social Fora: Representing Resistance and Alternatives? Critique and Alternative Interpretation From a Feminist Perspective / by Magdelena Freudenschuss : Transnational Feminisms and the World Social Forum: Encounters and Transformations in Anti-globalization Spaces / by Janet Conway : Is 'Another' Public Sphere Actually Possible? - In this special issue a move beyond aggregation, snapshots and easy labels to understand poverty more. The shortcomings of conventional analyses of poverty and the complexities involved in conceptualizing it in a more meaningful way is highlighted. Female-headed households clearly are disadvantaged in many countries. It is largely informed by the narrow way in which well-being is defined and statistics gathered in conventional poverty research, which also ignores the important dimension of agency that allows women heads to offset gender discrimination as well as the foregone income from a male partner. The extent to which risks for maternal mortality are unequally distributed among women from different socioeconomic backgrounds is highlighted. A research of household level data reveals that poverty and maternal mortality are strongly associated, highlighting the need to move beyond country averages when assessing development performance.

- Research implies that executive political office poses additional and different political challenges for women than legislative office. Yet, a few dozen women have accomplished their nations' highest executive office. Little research has been dedicated to the experiences of these women world leaders. This study builds profiles of the women leaders in the modern era and analyzes their background and political experiences in an effort to both identify commonalities among the women leaders and appraise the challenges they encountered on account of their sex.

- Description
- Recent research on migration, gender and remittances show distinct and disparate behaviors and practices that raise a number of questions and suggest the need for a more complete theory of migration that incorporates notions of cultural dynamics as they relate to behavior and societal outcomes. Men save to take money home and women do not, instead investing in their new local environs and purchasing durable items. Although men and women are equally likely to migrate, women remit wages and gifts to their parents' home at a significantly higher rate, and are expected to do so. However, more recently there is some evidence that gendered remittance patterns are changing, where men are possibly remitting almost as much as women.

- To fight poverty and environmental degradation and to respect human rights and women's rights at major UN conferences of the nineties governments committed themselves. Sustainability without qualified participation of women will not work was the message of the Rio Janeiro Agenda in 1992. At the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing a dual track strategy to this end: empowerment on the one hand and gender mainstreaming, the systematic integration of a gender perspective in all institutions and policy areas, on the other was identified. The unpaid care work of women and the precautionary principle are systematically taken as points of reference in the argumentative discourse.

- The focus is on whether the tendency toward increased participation has continued more recently and whether women have found enough decent and productive jobs to really enable them to use their potential in the labour market and achieve economic independence. The approach is based on updates and analysis of a number of major labour market indicators. These include: labour force participation: unemployment: sector and status of employment: wages/earnings: and education and skills. Taken together, they show whether women who want to work actually do so, whether women find it harder to get a job than men, differences in the type of work done by women and men and equality of treatment in areas ranging from pay to education and training.
