- Description
- This essay on prostitution begins by putting prostitution in its general context. Prostitution is not only almost universal in human societies, which would indicate that it is very much related to certain basic individual or social needs that cannot be met by other social means. Prostitutes and call-girls can exist only because generally law-abiding citizens are willing to pay for their services, but it is the prostitutes who are socially stigmatized through arrest, conviction and, sometimes, imprisonment for the activity. The customers are almost never revealed or, if revealed, are not stigmatized. This is the common situation for crimes without victims and while it may certainly be a more efficient way to control such deviance, it does raise serious moral questions.

- All societies except those with the most rudimentary division of labor frequently have persons whose vocational persuits are in violation of formal norms and are therefore deviant if not illegal. Illegal practitioners, like members of regular occupations, exhibit craftsmanship values and pride in the product or service they render. A young attractive female, for example, who yearns for a luxurious lifestyle, but has no talent to catapult her into stardom and no prospective wealthy husband may become a high-priced call girl.

Morality is difficult to enforce by law and prostitution continues to exist despite its illegal status.
