- Description

- Description
- Brooks examines whether various behaviors--such as crying, acting tough, displays of anger, or knowledge gaffes--by male and female political candidates are regarded differently by the public. Refuting the idea of double standards in campaigns, Brooks's overall analysis indicates that female candidates do not get penalized disproportionately for various behaviors, nor do they face any double bind regarding femininity and toughness. Brooks also reveals that before campaigning begins, women do not start out at a disadvantage due to gender stereotypes. In fact, Brooks shows that people only make gendered assumptions about candidates who are new to politics, and those stereotypes benefit, rather than hurt, women candidates.

- Description
- Table of contents available online. This book offers a cartography of the sentimental in shaping North America in the nineteenth century. It puts forward a critical method for thinking about sentimentalism as a genre, mode, and political and affective outlook people have used to cultivate a sense of intimacy across distance, an 'affective geography'. It focuses on the experiences and perspectives of those whose bodies, labour, and sovereignty have been occupied to ground others' lives and world-making projects. Bringing literary and rhetorical studies together with critical race and gender theory, cultural geography, American studies, affect studies and the new materialism, this book lays out sentimentalism's usefulness to settler colonialism and the maintenance of racialized labour. The book also charts sentimentalism's value as a means of resisting geographic displacement and both physical and metaphysical dispossession. Philosophers and rhetoricians regard grounds as necessary conditions for argumentation. This book treats grounds as also geopolitical, geoaffective, and geophysical, mapping them as alternately shaky, unsettling, and stabilizing. With analyses of the narrative and continent in works by Sojourner Truth, Harriet E. Wilson, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, Nathaniel Hawthorne 'The scarlet letter', and others: and the white, sentimental constructions of Indian Removal and the 'Trail of Tears'.

Exploring how black and white nineteenth-century women writers defined, expressed, and dramatized anger, she reconceptualises antebellum women's writing and illuminates an unrecognized tradition of discontent in American literature.

- Description
- In the late 1980s, after a decade spent engaged in more routine interest-group politics, thousands of lesbians and gay men responded to the AIDS crisis by taking to the streets. But by the early 1990s, the organization they founded, ACT UP, was no more—even as the AIDS epidemic raged on. Weaving together interviews with activists, extensive research, and reflections on the author’s time as a member of the organization, this book tells the story of the rise and fall of ACT UP, highlighting a key factor in its trajectory: emotion. Overlooked by many scholars of social movements, emotion, Gould argues, plays a fundamental role in political activism. From anger to hope, pride to shame, and solidarity to despair, feelings played a significant part in ACT UP’s style of protest, which included demonstrations, die-ins, and other kinds of street theater.
