- Description
- In tracing the political battle over reproduction rights through government politics from 1830 to the present, Caron synthesizes historical discussions of abortion. birth control, and sterilization, placing these three means of reproductive control into a cohesive framework. She goes on to present a case study of Rhode Island, one of only two states to exempt women from prosecution for abortion. When most states adopted Comstock laws and eugenic sterilization legislation, partly to control and shape the population, Rhode Island did not. Caron also examines the political, moral, and economic forces that shaped reproductive policies and the impact these restrictive policies have had on women's autonomy and equality.
