- Description
- The author, a women's history professor, explores the stereotypes that surround women's studies courses. Since 1993 she has traveled the globe with her one-woman play 'Revenge of the Women's Studies Professor', engaging audiences in a conversation about the backlash against feminism and women's studies. This book presents scenes from the original play along with reflections on changing views of gender and sexuality in American society, politics, and popular culture.

- Description
- This volume provides a picture of the current state of feminist sociological gender and women's studies research in four regions of the world--Africa, Asia, Latin America/Caribbean, and Europe. The introductory essay to each region explains how social science research on women and/or gender issues has been shaped by economics, politics, and culture, and by trends that are simultaneously local, regional and global. Then each regional section includes up to chapters on gender research in specific countries that represent the region's diversity and cover the major trends that have emerged over time, as well as the relationship of key research questions to feminist activism and women’s or gender studies. The editors illustrate this new wave of gender scholarship with samples of research articles from additional countries in the region, that cover a wide range of topics, such as work, sexuality, masculinities, childcare and family issues, religion, violence, law and gender policies. Finally, this volume provides scholars with extensive bibliographies and a listing of web sites for women’s and gender research centers in 85 countries.

- Description
- Doing Gender in Media, Art and Culture is an introductory text in gender studies. It is an interdisciplinary and intergenerational approach which bridges the gap between humanities and the social sciences, and it showcases the academic and social context in which gender studies has evolved. Phenomena such as globalisation, neo-liberalism and 'fundamentalism' are addressed that stir up new questions relevant to the study of culture.

- Description
- This collection of essays traces the evolution of feminist pedagogy over the past twenty years, exploring both its theoretical and its practical dimensions. .Feminist pedagogy is defined as a set of epistemological assumptions, teaching strategies, approaches to content, classroom practices, and teacher—student relationships grounded in feminist theory. To apply this philosophy in the classroom, the editors maintain that feminist scholars must critically engage in dialogue and reflection about both what and how they teach, as well as how who they are affects how they teach. In identifying the themes and tensions within the field and in questioning why feminist pedagogy is particularly challenging in some educational environments, these articles illustrate how and why feminist theory is practiced in all kinds of classrooms. Contributors are: Dale M. Bauer : Pamela L. Caughie and Richard Pearce : Rebecca Ropers-Huilman: Debbie Storrs and John Mihelich : Sal Johnston: Maralee Mayberry and Margaret N. Rees: Estelle B. - Description
- If the contemporary portrayal of womankind were to be believed, contemporary female achievement would culminate in the ownership of expensive handbags, a vibrator, a job, a flat and a man. Did the desires of twentieth-century women's liberation achieve their fulfilment in the shopper's paradise of 'naughty' self-pampering, playboy bunny pendants and bikini waxes? That the height of supposed female emancipation coincides so perfectly with consumerism is a miserable index of a politically desolate time. Much contemporary feminism doesn't seem too concerned about this coincidence. This book suggests alternative ways of thinking about transformations in work, sexuality and culture that, while seemingly far-fetched in the current ideological climate, may provide more serious material for future feminism.
