- Description
- In this publication, the author shows how, even in an era of globalization, national context is playing an important role in the development and use of genetic technologies. Focusing on the development and deployment of genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer (known as BRCA testing) in the United States and Britain, she develops a comparative analysis framework in order to investigate how national ‘toolkits' shape both regulations and the architectures of technologies and uses this framework to assess the implications of new genetic technologies.

- Description
- In the years between the first and second world wars the fenomenon of stardom and celebrity spread to writers. Personal appearances and private lives came to fascinate readers as much as their work. Fame and commercial success of these writers, and their gender affected the literary reception of their work. Literary elites called their writing 'middlebrow'. This book is a comparative study of North American and British literary celebrity. It profiles seven American, Canadian, and British women writers - Dorothy Parker, Anita Loos, Mae West, L. M. Montgomery, Margaret Kennedy, Stella Gibbons, and E.M. Delafield.

- Description
- This book looks at the intersection of gender, citizenship, and nationalism: marriage, intermarriage, and how states gender that relationship: and the ways in which women are used as symbols to reinforce or further nationalistic goals. Women have long struggled with issues of citizenship, identity, and the challenge of being recognized as equal members of the community. Governments use feminine imagery (e.g., mother country) to create a national identity, while simultaneously minimizing the role that women play as productive contributors to the society. The authors examine the relationship of government and women in four different countries: the United States, Israel, the former Yugoslavia, and Northern Ireland. In each case, numerous similarities appear: conflict plays a significant role in the definition of citizenship for women: women's movements have worked in contradiction to the state: and citizenship and marriage are gendered undertakings.

- Description
- Two developments influenced the history of the Atlantic world between 1770 and 1870: the rise of women’s rights activism and the drive to eliminate chattel slavery. The contributors to this volume investigate the intertwining histories of abolitionism and feminism on both sides of the Atlantic during this century of change. They illuminate the many ways that the two movements developed together and influenced one another. The authors ask how conceptions of slavery and gendered society differed in the United States, France, Germany, and Britain: how women’s activism reached across national boundaries: how racial identities affected the boundaries of women’s activism: and what was distinctive about African-American women’s participation as activists.

the middle-aged female body in contemporary women's fiction

- Description
- This book examines the texts of a number of English and American contemporary women's novels dealing with middle age. These novels of midlife chart the brief development of a female protagonist in early or late middle age as she achieves some measure of emotional and physical contentment or wisdom. Paloge clearly shows that these novels, which claim to confront in narrative terms the gender-bound implications of aging, generally reveal an unconscious denial of the truth of aging's significance for women, a consistent dishonesty on this score, and an ultimate refusal to confront the issues they claim to examine. The book explores fiction by such authors as Margaret Atwood, Joan Barfoot, Fay Weldon, and Joyce Carol Oates, in search of the middle-aged woman's body and its decline unto death. If the quest for happiness or meaning in most of these novels proves successful, it is despite, rather than because of, the middle-aged body.

- Description
- In this book Purbrick offers an analysis of contemporary domestic consumption. She investigates the ritualized presentation of objects upon marriage, and their subsequent cycles of exchange within the domestic sphere. Focusing on gift-giving in Britain from 1945 to the present, comparative context is provided by material from North America and Europe. .By considering how the specific contexts in which consumption occurs, such as married domesticity, can limit possible versions of selfhood, The Wedding Present tests the assumption that consuming creates individual identities. Thus, the book argues, consumption cannot be isolated as an explanation of individual or social formation. .The publication consists of: Introduction: Making homes and worlds: marriage and consumption from 1945 to today : Objects of approval : China and pyrex: the practices of preservation : Accounting for change: forgotten, neglected and altered objects : The list: domesticity, conformity and class (The gift list): Methods: mass-observation : Afterword: unmarried households.

- Description
- American GIs in wartime England were instantly attractive to British women - especially in the absence of their fighting men. Some seventy thousand British war brides returned to the United States. In this book Friedman tells how Brithish and American mass media presented this phenomenon. She focuses on media representations of sexuality and marriage in wartime, showing how mass media interpretations turned from public suspicion of war brides to popular acceptance. She considers how the brides saw themselves compared to their media images and shows how the media co-opted brides as symbols of the Anglo-American 'special-friendship', postwar power imbalance, and gendered ideals of marriage and domestication.
