- Description
- Radio played a paradoxical role in the Cold War, embraced both as a key tool for propaganda warfare as well as for promoting peace and understanding. Women, too, played paradoxical roles both in radio and on the world stage. In this article the authors explore these paradoxes in a transnational perspective by focusing on The International Association of Women in Radio and Television. This international network of women provides insights into how women broadcasters viewed radio and themselves in the global ideological struggles of the Cold War. Exploring the organization's international networking practices, its positioning within international women's movements, as well as their conceptions of the relationship between women and radio, the authors show how in each of these arenas, despite a belief in a universal womanhood and striving for a global organization, the organization can be seen falling into the emerging Western camp of the Cold War.

- On 2 May 1923 the BBC launched Women's Hour, a daily bespoke programme aimed at its female audience produced by Ella Fitzgerald. In December 1923 a Women's Advisory Commmitte (WAC) was established te represent women's interests at the BBC, among them Lady Denman, Dorothea Baird and Elizabeth Sloan Chesser. The WAC introduced a range of programme ideas and also prompted a debate about the premise of the programme, whether it should be about domesticity or provide escapism from the 'common task' of housework. This article explores how the BBC sought to address its female audience in the early 1920s.

- Description
- The American First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was a writer, public speaker and broadcaster. She appeared on radio programs in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, both in the US and abroad. In many of her daily newspaper columns over the years, she spoke of the importance of international radio and seemed to suggest there was a unique role for the medium as a way to reach ordinary men and women. This article looks at American broadcasting to France in the early Cold War and considers two broadcasts Mrs. Roosevelt made while in France with the United Nations: a 1948 episode of the prgram Changement de Decors and a series of weekly talks about the UN for the French service in 1951-52.
