- Description
- Stella Browne’s life was an experiment in new possibilities. Passionately committed to socialism, feminism and the rights of the indvidual, she promoted a radical vision of the sexual reform of society. Hall sets her into the context of her progressive times and friends and associates, including Edward Carpenter, Rebecca West, Havelock Ellis, Dora Russell and Winifred Holtby. She relates how Stella Browne overturned many assumptions about women in the early twentieth century. How at a time when even birth control was barely mentionable, she publicly argued for women’s access to safe abortion, revealed to a government committee that she herself had undergone this then illegal operation, and co-founded the Abortion Law Reform Association. She was a militant suffragette, campaigned for pacifism during the Great War, joined the new British Communist Party then left over its indifference to birth control. She was a dedicated internationalist, perhaps the first British women to speak publicly on lesbianism, and practised what she preached, living the free love she advocated.

- Description
- Following the structure of the first edition of Gendered Intersections, this second edition examines the intersections across and between gender, race, culture, class, ability, sexuality, age and geographical location from the perspectives of academics, artists and activists. Using different mediums — academic research, poetry, statistics, visual essays, fiction, emails and music — this collection explores gender through issues such as Aboriginal self-governance, poverty, work, spirituality, globalization and community activism. This new edition brings a greater focus on politics, and gender and the law. It also includes access to a Gendered Intersections website, which contains several performances by poets and a Gendered Intersections Quiz, which highlights the historical and contemporary contributions of women and non-hegemonic men to Canadian society.

- Description
- Heightened awareness of the problem of sexual abuse has led to deep anxiety over adults touching children—in nearly any context. Though our society has moved toward increasingly strict enforcement of this taboo, studies have shown that young children need regular human contact, and the benefits of breastfeeding have been widely extolled. Exploring the complicated history of love, desire, gender, sexuality, parenthood, and inequality, The bookt probes the issue of how we can draw a clear line between natural affection toward children and perverse exploitation of them. The author demonstrates that we cannot determine what is wrong about sexual abuse without first understanding what is good about appropriate sensual affection. Pondering topics such as the importance of touch in nurturing children, the psychology of abuse and victimhood, and recent ideologies of motherhood, she argues that we must expand our philosophical and theological language of physical love and make a distinction between sexual love and erotic love.

- The author uses the personal narratives of college-educated black women and national survey data to compare college-educated black women’s experiences of romance, reproduction, and family to those of less-educated black women and those of white and Hispanic women with degrees. She argues that educated black women’s disadvantages in romance and starting a family are consequences of a system of racial inequality and discrimination.

- Analysis of marriage from historical, social, cultural, psychological and legal perspectives. Some authors argue that marriage continues to retain its prime importance in reproducing the social order and its claim to be the only legitimate structure of the family, rather than one among others. Other authors stress the impact of changes wrought by globalization, information technology and the increasing visibility of queer life forms and practices. The collection is divided into four parts, moving from a historical perspective to present-day concerns: Part I, ‘Historicizing Marriage: Marriages Are Made in Scriptures’: Part II, ‘Contextualizing Marriage: Class, Caste, Masculinity and Violence’: Part III, ‘Representing Marriage: Sex, Conjugality and Videotapes’: and Part IV, ‘Recasting Marriage: Singlehood, Coupledom and Intimate Others’.

- When Edith Wharton became friends with Henry James, she joined a group of men who became her 'inner circle.' This group included both well-known figures, such as James, Percy Lubbock, and Bernard Berenson, and several now forgotten, including John Hugh Smith, Walter Berry, Gaillard Lapsley, Robert Norton, and Howard Sturgis. .Susan Goodman here presents an intimate view of this American expatriate community, as well as the larger transatlantic culture it mirrored. She explores how the group, which began forming around 1904 and lasted until Wharton's death in 1937, defined itself against the society its founders had left in the United States, while simultaneously criticizing and accommodating the one it found in Europe. Tracing Wharton's individual relationships with these men and their relationships with one another, she examines literary kinships and movements in the biographical and feminist context of gender, exile, and aesthetics. She also relates the group to other literary circles, such as the Bloomsbury group and Gertrude Stein's salon.

- High schoolviolence is often a teenage rite of passage, but there are extremes--as when a race riot at a Los Angeles campus in the spring of 2005 resulted in a police lockdown. In this book Mary Thomas interviewed 26 Latina, Armenian, Filipina, African American, and Anglo girls at that high school to gauge their responses to the campus violence. They all denounced the outbreak, calling for multicultural understanding and peaceful coexistence. However, as much as the girls want everyone to just 'get along,' they also exhibit strong racist beliefs and validate segregated social spaces on campus and beyond. How can teenagers and 'girl power' work together to empower instead of alienate multicultural groups? In her book Thomas foregrounds the role that space plays in girls' practices that perpetuate social difference, and she explains the ways we navigate the intellectual terrain between scholarship and school yard.

- A history of the GDR's sexual revolution and its limits. The author shows that under communism divorce rates soared, abortion become commonplace and the rate of births outside marriage was amongst the highest in Europe. Nudism went from ban to state-sponsored boom, and erotica became common currency in both the official economy and the black market. Public discussion of sexuality was, however, tightly controlled and there were few opportunities to challenge traditional gender roles or sexual norms.

- Description
- From Adelaide in 'Guys and Dolls' to Nina in 'In the Heights' and Elphaba in 'Wicked,' female characters in Broadway musicals have belted and crooned their way into the American psyche. In this book, Wolf illuminates the women of American musical theatre - performers, creators, and characters -- from the start of the cold war to the present day, creating a feminist history of the genre. Moving from decade to decade, Wolf first highlights the assumptions that circulated about gender and sexuality at the time. She then looks at the leading musicals to stress the key aspects of the plays as they relate to women, and often finds overlooked moments of empowerment for female audience members. The musicals discussed here are among the most beloved in the canon--'West Side Story,' 'Cabaret,' 'A Chorus Line,' 'Phantom of the Opera,' and many others--with special emphasis on the blockbuster 'Wicked.' Along the way, Wolf demonstrates how the musical since the mid-1940s has actually been dominated by women--women onstage, women in the wings, and women offstage as spectators and fans.

- Description
- As early as 1837 some Nicaraguan women expressed interest in eliminating the tyranny of male domination, and this interest grew into full-fledged campaigns for female suffrage and access to education by the 1880s. By the 1920s a feminist movement emerged among urban, middle-class women and lasted for two more decades until it was eclipsed in the 1950s by a nonfeminist movement of mainly Catholic, urban, middle-class and working-class women who supported the liberal, populist, patron-clientelistic regime of the Somozas in return for the right to vote and various economic, educational, and political opportunities. Counterintuitively, it was actually the Somozas who encouraged the participation of women in the public sphere (as long as they remained loyal Somocistas), whereas their opponents, the Sandinistas and Conservatives, often appealed to women through their maternal identity.
