- Description
- This book explores the professional, civic, and personal roles of women teachers throughout American history. Its themes and findings build from the mostly unpublished writings of many women. Clifford studied personal history manuscripts in archives and consulted printed autobiographies, diaries, correspondence, oral histories, interviews to probe the multifaceted imagery that has surrounded teaching. This work surveys a long past where schoolteaching was essentially men's work, with women relegated to restricted niches such as teaching rudiments of the vernacular language to young children and socializing girls for traditional gender roles.

- Description
- By including the perspectives of minority teachers and students, and by drawing on feminist, queer and anti-racist frameworks, this book rejects the familiar tendency to resort to role modelling as a basis for explaining or addressing boys' disaffection with schooling. The authors argue, on the basis of their research in urban schools in Canada and Australia, that educational policy concerned with male teacher shortage and the plight of disadvantaged minority boys would benefit from engaging with analytic perspectives and empirical literature that takes readers beyond hegemonic discourses of role modelling. The author stresses the need to disarticulate discourses about role modelling from a politics of representation that is committed to addressing the reality of the impact of racial and structural inequalities on both minority teachers and students' participation in the education system.

- Description
- From the beginning of their lives, the Olivier sisters stood out: surprisingly emancipated, strikingly beautiful, markedly determined, and alarmingly 'wild'. The sisters seemed always to be one step ahead of their time. Margery and Daphne studied at Cambridge when education was still thought by some to be damaging to ovaries. Noel became a doctor: Daphne a pioneering teacher: Margery's promising trajectory was shot down by mental illness: Brynhild, the great beauty of the four, excelled as a Bloomsbury hostess yet gave it up for love and a life of uncertainty.

- Description
- The author asks the question, what does it mean for an entire profession to be numerically dominated by white women, and what is the relationship between teacher preparation and professional feminization? The book tells the story of three very different teacher preparation programs, explores the hopes and struggles of the mostly white, female students in those programs, and opens a window upon the closed world of teacher educators themselves who must straddle multiple worlds and multiple masters.
