- Description
- This book presents a systematic account of dependency care in a liberal theory of justice. Receiving dependency care is necessary for human survival, but the practices with which we meet society’s care needs are seldom recognized for their functional role. Norms about gender and race obscure and shape expectations about whose needs for care are legitimate as well as about whose caregiving labor more advantaged members of society will receive. Bhandary develops a form of social contract theory with which to evaluate society’s caregiving arrangements. Building on work by feminist liberals and care ethicists, it reframes debates about care to move beyond gender with an inequality-tracking framework that can be employed in any culture.

- Study commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs at the request of the FEMM Committee, the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament. .COVID-19 has direct and indirect effects on women, other genders and marginalised groups within Europe. This study outlines some of the key gendered effects of the outbreak thus far and suggestions for how these may extend into the post-crisis period based on currently available data on COVID and longer-term effects of previous outbreaks of pathogens. This includes the lack of sex-disaggregated data, the role of healthcare workers and care workers, domestic violence, the impact of quarantine on feminised sectors of the economy, the additional unpaid labour on women as a result of lockdown, access to maternity, sexual and reproductive health services.

- Description
- This UN policy brief focuses on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender equality and women's rights. It looks at four thematic areas: economy, health, unpaid care work and gender-based violence. .The economic impacts of the pandemic are especially felt by women and girls who are earning and saving less, having insecure jobs or living near to poverty. The health of women is impacted by the reallocation of resources and priorities, including sexual and reproductive health services. The report states that unpaid care work, mainly performed by women, has increased with children staying at home and older persons who need more help. Besides, as a consequence of the 'lockdown' many women experience domestic violence. Suggestions for national policies imply including women and women’s organizations in all COVID-19 decision making processes, realizing an inclusive care economy and designing socio-economic plans with focus on women and girls.

- Description
- This study explores the phenomenon of precarious work in the EU from a gender and intersectionality perspective. It finds that women, particularly young women, those with a migrant background and women with low levels of educational attainment, are especially vulnerable. This is a recurring trend across all of the member states within the study’s scope. One of the key factors behind this is the disproportionate amount of time that women spend in caregiving roles and domestic work, something that is reinforced by COVID-19. The study is commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs at the request of the FEMM Committee,

- Description
- Across several social, economic, and political dimensions, women and girls are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 crisis because of their sex. This working paper presents indicators for two dashboards, which give an overview of gender inequalities from the COVID-19 crisis. The first dashboard covers a set of indicators on capabilities at risk. The first set of indicators points to women's health and risk factors by examining women's presence in the health sector, access to sexual and reproductive health and their risk of underlying cardiovascular conditions. The second set of indicators explores women's presence in the formal and informal economy. The second dashboard offers indicators regarding safe space at the household level, time spent on unpaid domestic and care work, child marriage and intimate partner violence. It also covers indicators about women's representation in responding to the crisis through for example access to technology, education and political participation.

- In this report CARE draws attention to the short- and longer-term effects of the crisis on women’s economic wellbeing. It argues that the economic and financial impacts of public health crises are extremely gendered. Globally, and particularly in development and humanitarian settings, women are more likely to work in informal and/or low-paid jobs which frequently lack legal and social protections. Investment in women and their economic empowerment creates opportunities to improve the economic growth. It is crucial for COVID-19 decision-makers to consider both the needs and capacities of vulnerable populations, especially women and girls, and the effects of those strategies.

- Description
- Globally, as more people are at home than ever, due to measures and lockdowns against the corona virus, the need for household chores and care has multiplied. The Women Count programme of UN Women has rolled out Rapid Gender Assessment surveys (RGAs) in nearly 50 countries to monitor how these results are being used to improve the design of COVID-19 programmes and interventions and is documenting 'use cases' that integrate RGA results within gender-responsive planning, programming, or advocacy work amid COVID-19. Gathering these gender data is helping countries prioritize the rights of women and girls. .In this report data were analyzed on who is doing more unpaid domestic and care work, the increase of time spent on household chores by women and men, involvement of sons and daughters, overwork or job loss by domestic workers, average hours spent on childcare, who is giving up paid work, and COVID-19 policy measures by governments on women's economic security and unpaid care work.
