- Description
- In this special about the interfaces of auto/biography two articles and four essays centering around the uses and revalations of voice in auto/biography. Lu Bailey presents a complicated auto/biographical portrayal of the mostly invisible experiences and teaching conditions of over-worked and under-compensated contingent female faculty in contemporary academic institutions. Sharon Larson examines the intersection of masculine discourse and its construction of female voice and identity. By exploring the intersection of the male narrator's construction of female hysteria to Freud's case study Dora, Larson seeks to unveil the incapacity of Duras's male narrator to articulate feminine subjectivity. Larson then turns to Cixous's écriture féminine to re-locate female subjectivity in psychoanalytic discourse and auto/biographical writing, calling for a reader that reads such work not for the 'madness' of women but the complicity of the narrator and the possibility of other meanings to women's lives beyond masculine self-perceptions. The four essays move in similar directions: the ethics, challenges, and transformations of auto/biographical research.

- Description
- This issue is devoted to areas of concern articulated in the Beijing Platform for Action. The report 'Gender Equality: Striving for Justice in an Unequal World' presents the results of research and analysis concerning macroeconomics, well-being and gender equality: women, work and social policy: women in politics and public life: and gender, armed conflict and the search for peace. The transition of women in politics to advance for gender equality issues and women-friendly policies depends on the effectiveness of women's movements in holding governments accountable, and gender-sensitive good governance. Women's economic activity rates have been rising in most part of the world, yet labour market continue to be segmented by gender. The intensification of women's paid work has been paralleled by a deterioration in the terms and conditions of work. Attention is being paid to civic and political participation of women in Central and Eastern Europe and the challenges of equality and difference.

- Description
- This paper explores the trend of sexual violence against women that emerged in Pakistan with the introduction of the Islamization process through the implementation of the Sharia laws since 1979. The focal pont is rape and the state legislation that governs it, namely the Zina Hudood Ordinance and the Law of Evidence, and how the gender-discriminatory nature of these laws serves as a powerful weapon in the hands of the patriarchal society of Pakistan to suppress women. These laws and their rigid interpretation in the name of Islam have not only furthered oppression and sexual violence against women to an alarming degree in Pakistan, but also seriously destroyed women's chances of equal justice. The factors that led to the implementation and survival of such laws in the first place, and consequently how rape became a intimidating weapon against women, are discussed. The paper examines the various political, social, cultural and religous factors that contribute to this situation, and the legal and social complexities involved for women in seeking justice in rape cases. In conclusion Pakistani women's initiative in evolving and building an organized resistance and struggle for the cancellation of gender discriminatory laws are discussed.

- Global media monitorings prove that women remain to be invisible in the media. In 1995 the first media-monitoring was held on the World Women's Conference in Beijing. It was conducted by Media Watch, Canada. Groups of volenteer researchers analyzed thousands of world's newspapers. Monitoring proved that women were covered in 17% of all articles published. Women in media are still less than men, even in countries where feminism has won. The study 'Women's opinion in mass media' shows that, in the majority of cases, resorting to gender topics is of haphazard character.

- The courtesans in the mid-nineteenth century held respect within the Nawabi court. They taught young men of noble lineage etiquette, polite manners, and the art of literary appreciation. Because they also provided sexual services they were not entirely seen as part of the Muslim respectable gentry. 'Umroa Jan Ada', a novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa was made into a television series and raised questions about how popular television can open space for a discussion on gender politics in present-day Pakistan.
